You know how there are places that seem to be the backdrop to your childhood? Places where so many memories were made. The soccer field and grandma and grandpa?s house are two of those places. My grandparents have twelve children. All, but two live within the same city and only one lives out of state. That isn?t a coincidence. That is how they were raised. FAMILY.
You can imagine when twelve children marry and have children and their children have children and we all stick around?it gets crazy. It also means that grandma and grandpa?s was THE place to be. I feel like I spent every day of summer in that pool. Swimming at grandma & grandpa?s (Quinn?s great grandma and grandpa) made the summer to do list- per Quinn?s request.
This is the pool I learned to swim in. This is the pool I learned to dive in. It is do or die when mom is holding a metal pole and telling you to clear it. That pool is just one part of a home. A home that has hosted countless gatherings, family holidays and memories and it is for sale. A little hard to see the heart and soul of a family up for sale, but it is time. The pool, the house?it is all too much for my grandparents to take care of. They need a break.
I am so glad we have this summer though. Chances for Quinn to create memories in that pool? (Eleanor wanted nothing to do with it).
Can you imagine my shock when he got in and he could touch the bottom? Man! They grow up fast. Quinn has requested swimming lessons and told us he was going to swim in the Olympics. You heard here first folks . Of course, it ended with shivers and purple lips and him claiming he wasn?t cold. I remember those days. Who really wants the fun to end?
And y?all know we did sparklers on the Fourth of July. Can check those off the list. Quinn loved them until the flame got to the end, then he would panic. I tried explaining to him that it wont go past a certain point and that was the handle. Kid just didn?t trust me.
We are chipping away at that summer to do list. Trying to squeeze as many memories as we can out of the magic of summer.
What are the backdrops to your childhood? Any other aspiring Olympians out there?

(Edmonton) Male partners of breast cancer patients are likely to take a pass on spousal support groups in favour of exercise or an evening out with friends to cope with stresses associated with the disease, according to new research from the University of Alberta.
Faculty of Nursing professor Wendy Duggleby said spouses of women with breast cancer have unique needs when it comes to retaining a sense of hope at a time when they provide important physical and emotional support for their partners.
"There are many programs out there for women, but for men a lot of support mechanisms are support groups, and it was very clear from the participants in our study that's not what they wanted," said Duggleby, Endowed Nursing Research Chair in Aging and Quality of Life.
"What these spouses needed was help finding ways to do things for themselves to help reduce their stress."
The study, published in this month's Oncology Nursing Forum, is the first to look at the hope experience of male spouses of breast cancer patients, said Duggleby. Ensuring men have a sense of hope not only helps decrease their risk for depression, it helps their partners, too.
"If their husbands lose hope, the wives are really, really worried about them and they often lose hope themselves. For women with breast cancer, it actually helps with their own quality of life if we can do something to help the men. It's very interconnected."
In the study, men in Edmonton and Saskatoon were surveyed about hope and their ability to cope with their spouses' disease. Many reported that their partner's diagnosis was their darkest day, and that they struggled to find hope and balance after juggling career, added household duties and care.
Fighting back
Warren Tasker called upon a fighter's will when his partner Gwen Borowski was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 1, 2007. He made Borowski's needs a priority and together they put everything toward the fight, learning all they could about the disease and pressing physicians to explain treatment in detail.
"It was all I thought about, night and day," said Tasker, an Edmonton-based writer and editor, who wrote about the experience for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Prairies/NWT chapter.
After years of writing about boxing for the Edmonton Journal, he took up the sport to cope with stress, in addition to his regular running and cycling routine.
"I was getting hit and I was getting to hit back. It felt goodit felt really good," he said. "You need an outlet, you need to find something to release all the pent-up frustration, the fear, the apprehension, the anxiety."
In study interviews, filmed and posted online, spouses reported similar experiences, turning to exercise, music, hobbies and time away with friends to find balance. Many expressed a strong desire to be able to talk to or hear from other spouses who went through similar struggleswithout taking time from work or family to attend support groups, Duggleby said.
Work schedules also presented challenges with attending medical appointments with their spouses to hear information first-hand, which was another strong need spouses expressed.
"If you're a working man, it becomes difficult to go to some appointments, although some of that is just perception. They're not being excluded but they feel like they're being excluded. It's part of breaking down some of those barriers in cancer care," said Duggleby.
Duggleby said the findings should help health-care providers and agencies provide the specific support and resources these men need. For many spouses, an easy solution would be a guide showing where to find online information about breast cancer without information overload.
"They really do want something that's specific for them, tailored for their needs. It doesn't have to be done through a research study. There is a lot that can be done just based on what these spouses said and the ideas they provided. It would make a huge, huge difference."

Eva and Hans Kristian Rausing attend the Glamour America Fashion Show and lunch at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Britain in London on Nov. 26, 1996.
By NBC News staff and wire services
LONDON -- Multi-millionaire Hans Kristian Rausing pleaded guilty Wednesday to preventing the proper burial of his wealthy U.S.-born wife Eva, whose badly decomposed body was found in the luxury London home she shared with her husband.
A spokeswoman for Britain's judiciary told The Associated Press that Rausing, whose father made billions selling his stake in the Tetra Pak drinks-carton empire, pleaded guilty at London's Isleworth Crown Court to charges of "preventing the lawful and decent burial" of his 48-year-old wife.
She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office policy.
Police discovered Eva Rausing's body in early July after her husband was stopped by police after driving erratically. It was found in a fly-filled room under a pile of clothing and garbage bags which had been taped together. ??
It was possible Eva Rausing died up to two months before her body was found, Isleworth Crown Court heard, according to?BBC News. ?A post-mortem examination established that she had drugs in her system, including cocaine. ??
In a statement to the court Hans Kristian?Rausing said he had been unable to confront the reality of his wife's death, the BBC added.
'Very traumatized' He told police that he did not have "a very coherent recollection of the events leading up to and since Eva's death" but that he had never wished her any harm.
"I did not supply her with drugs. I have been very traumatized since her death," he added, according to the BBC.?"I do not know what caused her death. I did not feel able to confront the reality of her death."
The judiciary spokeswoman told the AP that Hans Kristian Rausing would be sentenced later. He has been treated in a psychiatric facility in recent weeks.
His father has a net worth net worth estimated at 4.3 billion pounds ($6.7 billion) from the Tetra Pak sale.
Tragic story of addition Hans Kristian's plea caps a tragic story of addiction and wealth.
Eva Rausing's father?Tom Kemeny, a former Pepsi executive, said in a statement on July 17 that his daughter had earlier returned to the British capital to try to persuade her husband to join her in drug treatment in the U.S.
"At the time of her death her over-riding concern was for the safety of her beloved husband, for whom she interrupted her own treatment to return to London in an attempt to take him back with her to California, but tragically to no avail," he said in the statement.
The couple's struggles with addiction -- long known to their close friends and family -- became widely known in 2008 when Eva Rausing was caught trying to smuggle crack cocaine and heroin into the U.S. Embassy in London in her handbag.
Police later found more drugs, including a sizeable amount of cocaine, in a search of the couple's townhouse and the two were charged with drug possession.
Police struggle to shed light on US-born heiress' death
Prosecutors later agreed to drop the charges in exchange for formal police warnings when the couple -- who gave millions to anti-addiction charities -- admitted guilt.
Before the embassy arrest, Eva Rausing's good looks and beautiful clothes -- along with her husband and his friendly, bear-like countenance -- had made the Rausings, who had married shortly after they met in the 1980s, welcome participants on the London philanthropic scene.

Scott Eide knows how to sit still. He just prefers not to.
Ever since he can remember, he?s been a running, jumping, biking kind of guy. ?It didn?t matter if it was football, basketball, tag, two-on-two baseball or bikes,? he says. He and his neighborhood friends were always outside and moving. ?We only had two [TV] channels,? he quips.
Eide has participated in?and pushed his body through??one end of the spectrum to the other? where sports and fitness activities are concerned. A three sport athlete as a young man, Eide has also competed at the Master?s level in weightlifting?setting a few state records while he was at it?and the Master?s level in track and field. He?s competed in road races and is currently a duathlete (run-bike-run.)
Yet oddly enough, Eide doesn?t consider himself a competitive person. It?s more about experimentation, he insists. ?Let?s see what my body does when I do this,? is the goal. How far can I reach?
?When you have a bad race,? he adds, ?it?s not about he or she beat me: it?s what could I have done [differently]?
Eide recognizes that there is an obvious connection between his ?real? life and that of his chosen profession. But rather than it being a direct causal relationship, he sees ?one feed off the other.?
As an example, he sites his past work experience. A former strength and track coach at both SCSU and the College of St. Benedict, Eide began weightlifting because of his students. As a coach he wanted his athletes to be prepared, so he put himself through the training they needed in order to succeed. This, in turn, personally motivated him to compete.
?In my positions,? he comments, ?I?ve always had keys to the weight room. My office was three steps from the track. As a coach, it?s easy to be motivated.?
In addition, Eide has worked as a cardio-vascular assistant at the St. Cloud hospital, giving him a medical view of the health and fitness world, and as a trainer at both Gold?s Gym and the YMCA. Choosing different modes of the field keeps him engaged, he says. He is continually educating himself, and this he funnels right back into his classroom.
He also hones his skills by presenting in professional settings, like a recent appearance at ReJuv Medical in Waite Park. And although he demurs, ?I?m not really a kid person,? Eide volunteers in an after-school program with the University of Minnesota Extension at Bel Clare Acres, a low-income community in the area. He leads exercises and fitness games for disadvantaged children and considers it rewarding. Next up, Eide will volunteer at Rocori High School at an all-day weightlifting competition for area high school athletes.
And by the way, Eide?s influence doesn?t always fall so far from home. This weekend he will be competing in a duathlon with his 14-year-old son Noah in Buffalo, Minnesota. It is a race that they won last year.
And after that?who knows? But it?s a safe bet that Eide won?t be caught at home watching TV.

Here's a quick breakdown of the dynamics surrounding mobile advertising:?
Mobile usage has -- and will continue to -- grow exponentially: Smartphone sales have overtaken PC sales, and will soon dawrf them.?There are over one billion smartphones in use, and it's still early in the conversation cycle (with six billion dumbphones in use).?Time spent on mobile is growing rapidly, accounting for more than 10% of total web traffic, and more than 50% of Pandora and Twitter use.?
The mobile ad market is still relatively small: Last year, the total U.S. mobile ad spend was approximately $1.25 billion, a tiny fraction of overall U.S. ad spend.?And most "mobile ads" were simply search and display ads viewed on mobile.?
Why? Mobile CPMS are low, and ads are oftentimes intrusive. Ad spending has therefore not caught up with time spent on mobile.?These will remain significant challenges to mobile ads.
But, native ad formats are emerging and we are seeing growth: The future of the Internet is mobile,?and new ad formats are being designed and tested. So far,?sponsored stories have proven most effective for the advertiser and least intrusive to the user. Facebook created a mobile sponsored story business with a run rate of $180 million in almost no time.
The presentation is full of charts and data that can be easily downloaded, and put to use.
