My name is Ben Hunt and I am a 20-year-old student at Exeter University. I am currently starting my dissertation on the attitudes towards people with Cancer and the experiences that Cancer patients have had in returning to work or school or simply in finishing treatment. I am using my own and others experiences as research for the project.
As a former Cancer patient, having been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) at the age of 13, I found it very difficult in returning to school, still being on rigorous chemotherapy treatment and showing the effects. I experienced a lot of negativity and loneliness due to the attitudes my peers had towards Cancer. I was encouraged to live as ?normal? a life as I could, living with Cancer, but I found this close to impossible.
I would love to hear from anyone who has had similar or more positive experiences of returning to work or school. It would be a great help to the project and I of course will give any advice to anyone that wants it, if they have experienced similar things.
The aim of my project is to ultimately help Cancer patients feel more comfortable in returning to ?normal life? through understanding the public attitude towards Cancer. Therefore any advice or experience anyone has would be a fantastic help, not only to my project, but also to Cancer patients who are returning to work or school.
The main questions I am focusing on are:
How Cancer patients feel returning to school/work?
How Cancer patients felt their peers/co-workers reacted towards them? Whether these reactions are positive or negative.
What experiences Cancer patients, other than myself, have had in returning to ?normal life?.
