The guy down the street who is selling vitamins and supplements at your local V&S store is probably paying more than $500 (likely much more) a month just to keep his doors open for you to walk through, take a look around, and not buy anything.
Remember ? he has to pay rent, utilities, insurance ? at a bare minimum. And he hasn?t even bought anything to sell yet.
On the other hand, let?s say you decide to sell vitamins and supplements too ? but you?ve decided that you want to reach a wider group of customers ? and plan to set up your shop online.
How will your online store be any different than the guy down the street?
Well, there is no rent, utilities or insurance for you to pay! Yes, you (online business owner) will have to be somewhere, but that?s about it.
I would think you are paying for the privilege of being somewhere anyway.
But even if you barely have a place to lay your head, and only have access to the internet at your local library, you can still operate an online store.
Yes, (you say) but now I?ll have to pay to have a fancy website built (that is my ?rent?) and set up some sort of online payment system that I?ll have to pay someone to maintain.
Well, maybe and maybe not. There are a lot of budget-friendly alternatives to setting up complicated and expensive e-commerce sites.
If I wanted to start an online vitamin and supplement store, I?d likely head over to eBay or Amazon, set up an account with PayPal ? and I?m in business.
And if I didn?t want to play with Amazon or eBay, I?d set up a WordPress Site and a Facebook Fan Page (and maybe a Twitter account). Since Twitter and Facebook are free, my ?rent? would likely be somewhere around $35 per month versus $500 or more!
But (I can hear you!) still I?d have to have money to buy all those vitamins and supplements.
Yes ? very likely you will. But so does the guy down the street. (You decided you wanted to be a business person like him, remember? ) So yes, you?ll need to have some vitamins to sell?
But since your store is online, maybe you could find a wholesaler or manufacturer to partner with and simply ask him to drop-ship whatever you sell to your customer. This way, you won?t have to spend any money at all on inventory.
So you see? It?s probably not as expensive or as difficult as you might think to get yourself online and selling products or services.
In terms of setting up a website (even one that sells products), it?s only a matter of finding products to sell, setting up a WordPress site, and finding a reliable web host.
So please don?t shy away from the idea of starting an online business because you are strapped for cash. You can get excellent web hosting for as little as $10 a month.
It?s not more money that you need: it?s an idea and time.
