How I Power My Business
By Pamela Wilson of Big Brand System

What is the story behind the launch of Big Brand System?

Over my 25-year career as a graphic designer and marketing consultant, I met many small business owners who were in an impossible position.

They were just starting out, and they desperately needed to establish their brand. But they couldn?t afford to hire someone like me, or bring in an agency to do the work.

I got tired of being powerless to help.

So I started Big Brand System in 2010 to show small business owners how to build big brands for their businesses using strategic marketing and good design practices.

It turns out that people who want to DIY their marketing are especially lucky right now. There are many free or low-cost tools available that used to be accessible only to professionals.

The missing piece? The knowledge to use those tools and apply them to your own business.

That?s where Big Brand System comes in. Through weekly blog posts and a newsletter, I share information, advice and encouragement for small business owners who are navigating the marketing waters for the first time.

I?ve created targeted products to help the process as well: Site Setup Kit, which includes everything you need to put together a website that?s easy to maintain; eBook Evolution, an all-in-one kit for writing, creating and marketing an ebook; Visual Buzz 101, an ongoing series of live webinars that help you use visuals in your marketing; and my Total Mastery program, which is a comprehensive member site that shows you how to master marketing and design techniques that will save you money and time, and help you build a memorable brand.

What apps, software, service or gadgets are essential to the?operations of your business?

I?ve used Macs since 1983 (really), and can?t imagine life without them. There was a time in the 1990s when using a Mac felt very countercultural, and a little like you were trying to keep an eternal flame burning during a downpour. Luckily, early Mac users are beyond that, and we have a lot of good company now.

On my Mac, there are a few essentials I use to get business done. I?m a fan of a simple piece of software called Byword, which I use for writing blog posts. I like the ability to use it full screen and block out other distractions while I write.

This next recommendation isn?t a sexy choice, but I don?t know what I would do without Google Docs. I collaborate with joint venture partners to create to-do lists, webinar scripts, marketing plans and more.

I?m also a big fan of MindNode mind mapping software. There?s something about having the ability to enter random thoughts and move them around until they take on a structure that makes sense and provides clarity that I find essential to both planning and writing. Many of my articles start as a mind map before they move to a text document and then my web pages.

For my website, I am a huge WordPress fan. The Site Setup Kit product I co-created with Wendy Cholbi shows people how to set up and maintain a WordPress website even if they?re complete beginners.

I signed up to be a beta tester for MeetingBurner when it was first released, and now use the webinar service several times a month. It?s easy to use once you get the hang of it, and I enjoy the direct contact with my readers.

And finally, the best ?gadget? I can recommend for getting things done is to quit. Closing down social media, email, and other distractions is my go-to technique when I need to accomplish big things for my business.
