When you get into a car accident, it?s important that you and the other drivers in your household know what to do. In this blog, I discuss the steps to take after an auto accident.
1. Remain calm! If you panic, you will not remember to get all the the information you need to file a claim.
2. Check for injuries. If you or the other driver or any passenger is injured, call 911 immediately.
3. If there are no injuries, turn on your hazard lights. If the vehicles are operable, move them off the road to a safe location.
4. Make a note of the location of the accident, the date and time, and TAKE PICTURES of the vehicles and the scene of the accident, including street signs and cross streets.
5. Call 311 (non-emergency police number) to request that a police officer come to the scene of the accident, so you can file a police and accident report.
6. While you are waiting for the police to arrive, exchange contact information with the other driver. Make a note of the driver?s name, driver?s license number, make and model of car, license plate number, home address, and phone contact numbers, including work and cell.
7. DO NOT DISCUSS THE DETAILS OF THE ACCIDENT with the other driver. It?s best to let the insurance companies determine liablity and who is at-fault. Remember, the point of impact speaks a thousand words.
8. If the police come, write down the name of the police officer and make a note of the police or accident report number and the citation number is one is issued.
9. Call your own insurance agent or company to review your coverages before filing a claim.
I recommend that my own customers carry an ?Auto Accident Report Folder? in their car with a checklist of what to do after an accident. If you would like for me to mail one to you, please call or e-mail my office.
