Arctic bacteria help in the search to find life on moon Europa

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

In a fjord in Canada scientists have found a landscape similar to one of Jupiter's icy moons: Europa. It consists of a frozen and sulphurous environment, where sulphur associated with Arctic bacteria offer clues for the upcoming missions in the search for traces of life on Europa.

It is not easy to find a place on Earth where ice and sulphur come together, supposedly like on Europa, Jupiter's moon. Nonetheless, this place has been located at Borup Fjord Pass in the Canadian High Arctic. Here the sulphurous yellow emissions contrast with the whiteness of the environment, creating images similar to those captured at Jupiter's satellite.

US researchers have now verified that the sulphur involved in the life cycle of Arctic microorganisms has some characteristics that could help to detect biological remains on Europa. Large space agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency are already in the process of preparing missions.

"We have discovered that elemental sulphur (S) can contain morphological, mineralogical and organic 'biosignatures' linked to bacterial activity. If they are found on Europa, this would suggest the possible presence of microorganisms," as explained to SINC by Damhnait Gleeson, lead author of the study and currently member of the Centro de Astrobiologia (INTA-CSIC, Spain).

The 'biosignatures' are associated with needle and rhomboid sulphur shapes in which mineralised remains of microorganisms and extracellular material appears. Thanks to electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques, the formation of a rare type of sulphur has also been observed in association with organic components: the rosickyite. What is more is that small quantities (parts per million) of protein, fatty acids and other biomolecules have appeared in the sulphurous material.

"There is much evidence of bacterial activity," highlights Gleeson, who wonder if in the Europa's icy crust, or the ocean or lakes supposedly beneath it, there could be a similar microbial community that uses sulphur as their source of energy.

The researcher conducted the study, which has now been published in the Astrobiology journal, as a member of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Colorado in the USA. She is currently working as a scientist in the Centro de Astrobiologia in R?o Tinto (Spain), a place similar to Mars.

Re.vu

There's a subset of personal Webpage services that are less personal and more professional. They're r?sum?-based landing pages, and Re.vu (free) is our favorite because it delivers a graphical look at your life perfect for prospective employers to take it all in. And it does it all for free.

The key to using Re.vu (pronounced "review") is to have an account with LinkedIn, the professional social network (a.k.a. the one where you try to get a job rather than post pictures of your friends at parties). When you set up a Re.vu account, you're asked to utilize its LinkedIn importer, so it can build your r?sum? timeline based on the data stored at social network. The timeline is the core of your r?sum? landing page at re.vu/username. (You can upload your own standard r?sum? for employers to download, too.)

Page creation is similar to that on other landing page sites, such as Flavors.me (free, 4.5 stars) and About.me, with a floating toolbar that makes it easy to change the background, theme, or arrange elements on the page. The choices are sparse?for a reason, as Re.vu limits things to keep you from getting out of hand with a crazy design. For example, you can't change a single font.

You can use Re.vu's custom backgrounds or upload your own (maximum size is 2MB). Unlike with Flavors and About.me, where the emphasis is on creating a personal statement with a fancy background image, at Re.vu the page is about the data, not the background. Generic better here; the images provided with the Re.vu templates are probably best, unless you've got some serious graphic-artistry chops.

The timeline of your work and education is only imported once. After that, you have to keep it updated separately from LinkedIn. If you have typos on LinkedIn, they'll also appear on Re.vu, so it pays to go to LinkedIn and clean it up first so you only have to make changes once.

Once the data is imported, visit your profile and make edits anyway, because the fun stuff for the page isn't imported, you have to add it. That includes logos or images for each job you've had in the past, which pop-up when a cursor is passed over that section of the timeline. The Infographics tab will let you insert vital stats (put in numbers for anything, like businesses you've started, articles you've written, etc.), as well as graphs showing your job duties, favorite pastimes, interests, and languages. You can also upload portfolios of your work (in PDF or MS Office formats) to show off. These are the extras that make for a more interesting online r?sum??and, hopefully, will lead to a great job interview.

It's too bad your LinkedIn updates are not instantly seen at Re.vu, but again, this might be a wise decision since it can take some tweaking to get the timeline just right. Re.vu provides stats, will generate a QR code graphic to put on business cards, blogs, or even your traditional r?sum?, and will let you promote your new r?sum? page with search engines or via Twitter, Google+, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

It's odd that Re.vu doesn't let you link from your page to your other social networks, but perhaps very smart. Re.vu wants to keep things totally professional. For that reason alone, a Re.vu page is the best place to send prospective employers than any other landing page. That it makes your r?sum? look so good is the other. Re.vu is our Editors' Choice for r?sum?-based personal Web pages.

Google Brings ChromeOS To The Desktop, Launches Its First Chromebox

chromebox_largeGoogle, together with its partner Samsung, launched a new Chromebook and its first desktop Chromebox today. The most important change to the new Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is that it is significantly faster. While earlier versions featured a battery-friendly Intel Atom chip, these first Chromebooks often felt underpowered. This new version features an Intel Core chip, as well as 4GB of RAM, an HD camera, two USB 2.0 ports and a 1280x800 display. Pricing starts at $449 for the WiFi-only version. While this is a nice update, what's more interesting here is the launch of Google's first Chromebox ($329), a Mac Mini-like desktop version of the Chromebook that features more ports than the Chromebook, though it is missing an SD card reader. Otherwise, though, its specs are pretty similar to the laptop version. This is the first time Google is officially putting ChromeOS on a desktop machine, something it hopes will make the browser-centric operating system more appealing to business customers.

'Bachelorette' Emily Maynard Discusses Her Approach To Dating On Reality TV

NEW YORK -- Emily Maynard's love affair with Brad Womack on "The Bachelor" might have ended with a broken engagement, but she's taking a different approach to being "The Bachelorette."

She said in a recent interview that this time around she's making sure to get to know her suitors.

"(With Womack) I don't know if I asked all the right questions that I should have, so you'll see me really getting to know the guys a lot better," Maynard said.

This season, the 26-year-old is grilling the guys competing for her affection over whether they're prepared to become a father.

Maynard is a single mom to 6-year-old Ricki, whose father, late NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick, died in a plane crash in 2004. Maynard can't reveal whether she finds true love or gets engaged at the end of the season, but she does say she's happy she decided to take part in the show again.

"I hope that people can see how genuine I am in truly wanting to find somebody. I would never put myself through all this again if I didn't really believe in it," she said.

It was also important for Maynard to make sure the guys on the show were really interested in her and not just caught up in the competition.

"Every date I feel like I kind of repeated myself a lot because I wanted to make sure the guys were, you know, hopefully falling in love with me as a person and not with Emily `The Bachelorette' and I really wanted them to get to know me as me," she recalled.

ABC was definitely smitten with the idea of Maynard as its "Bachelorette." The network moved production of the show from Los Angeles to Charlotte, N.C., so Maynard could be with her daughter. It also made the experience a little more real.

"It was great because I could go out on these dates and also still do everyday mom stuff. I still had laundry to do and floors that needing vacuuming," she said.

Fast-forward 20 years and Maynard says she would hypothetically approve of her daughter one day being "The Bachelorette."

"I hope it never gets to this point for her, but I would because I had a great experience," Maynard said. "I want my daughter to be fearless and to follow her heart and her faith and do whatever that leads her to do, whether I approve or not."

"The Bachelorette" airs Mondays on ABC at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Start making money online with ease through video marketing

In the early years of internet marketing, just the fact that you had more knowledge than anyone else made it possible for you to make money on the internet. Marketers who blazed the trail in by making use of autoresponders and Google Adwords were in a good position to be successful financially as they had only a few competitors. The world of online marketing has developed considerably since that time and it is more vital than ever to build good relationships with new and existing customers. Continue reading to learn how relationship marketing can grow your business in many different ways.

Learn and understand what is video marketing

Even though marketing via email isn?t the only way to get in touch quickly with users these days, it is still extremely important in building a business online. List building is different since the major focus is no longer on increasing your number of subscribers. In fact, your list members will be on more lists than just yours, and so your main goal is to get them to eagerly open and read your emails. There is no doubt that email open rates have fallen in recent years, so you have to position yourself in such a way that your messages are seen as a priority to the people on your list. In life, whenever you givea whole lot you usually get a lot in return. If you give your subscribers helpful free information, they?re going to be more likely to purchase something when you recommend it to them. Thus, if marketing via email is still considered to be an important part of the marketing process, we need to acknowledge that social media has added a new dimension to relationship marketing. It is a fact that sites including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn play a vital role in the lives of many people and discussions transpire that can boost or damage a business online. As internet marketers it can be quite beneficial to have a presence on these sites as long as you have the intention to offer a positive experience for people you communicate with. If you interact with folks in a manner that encourages their trust, they?re almost certainly going to sign up for your email list or click through to your website. That is the objective since sales can then be made from your web site or through your email marketing. If you choose to study these social websites, you can expect to quickly find a dedicated group of people who will follow you because of how you build a relationship with them. Numerous marketers have done this successfully and you can follow in their footsteps by paying attention to the manner in which they use these sites. Just like any other online marketing strategy, if you observe individuals who have been successful, you can keep yourself from making some of the same irreparable blunders. These days relationship marketing is a priority on the Internet, and if you can provide value while being a person of ethics and someone people can trust, you can expect to succeed.

Mac Miller Helps Rookie MC Battle Cancer On The Mic

'There's a kid battling one of the toughest diseases in the world, yet he's courageous enough to talk about it in his music,' Miller tells MTV News of Yung Ka.
By Rob Markman

At the open of his 2010 track "The Spins," Mac Miller urges kids to follow their dreams, but the Pittsburgh MC does more than just give sound advice. Recently the Blue Slide Park rapper and his producer E. Dan linked up with aspiring MC Bobby Stewart, a.k.a. Yung Ka, to show him the ropes around the studio.

Stewart, who is suffering from a form of cancer called T-cell lymphoma, first met Miller at Mac's December 2011 homecoming concert in Pittsburgh after the rapper presented the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a check for $50,000.

"It's cool what I did, but the story here is him; the story is that there's a kid that's battling one of the gruesomest, toughest diseases in the world, yet he's courageous enough to talk about it in his music," Mac told MTV News when we caught up with him at the Bamboozle Music Festival in New Jersey on May 18. "This is someone who really talks about his sh-- in his music, like all the stages of cancer, to the point where it's uncomfortable for some to listen to because it's that much real, it's too real, it's that painful."

Miller served as a mentor for the 18-year-old rapper, but he didn't want to muddle the moment by guest-rapping on Ka's personal track. "I just wanted to do what I could do to mentor him and help him put a song together and give him what I know," he said. "I didn't want to step in on the song because to be real, he did a whole song about cancer, and then what am I gonna come in with on the third verse?"

The song hasn't been released yet, but last week Pittsburgh's WTAE Action News paid a visit to ID Labs, the studio where Mac, E. Dan and Ka recorded the track, and caught up with the up-and-coming MC.

"To be with Mac is a blessing," Ka said. "His lyrics are amazing. Hip-hop is my passion. To be able to be with Mac Miller ... he is a Pittsburgh legend. Wiz Khalifa shout-out."

Analysis: BOJ gets cold feet after Valentine surprise

TOKYO (Reuters) - Hyped up market expectations of more forceful steps by Japan's central bank to beat deflation since its two-punch monetary easing has raised concerns it needs to temper the message, or risk leading investors up a blind alley.

The Bank of Japan eased monetary policy in February and set a 1 percent inflation target to show its determination to fix deflation that has plagued the country for more than a decade.

The aggressive steps, from out of the blue on Valentine's Day, succeeded in altering market perception of what the authorities would do and how they would do it.

But now, alarmed by what it sees as overblown expectations of frequent easing and worried about demands for more quantitative steps, the BOJ is carefully trying to tell markets that the large-scale stimulus measures in February and April were exceptional and won't be easily repeated.

The BOJ wants to signal a pause after easing monetary policy twice in just over two months, but without dispelling expectations it will act if the economy slips.

That is a tough balancing act with potential pitfalls and a big challenge for a central bank rarely praised for its skills in communicating with markets.

"The February easing created a misperception that monetary policy can solve everything. That needed to change," said a source familiar with the central bank's thinking. "A period of easing sporadically to beat deflation may be coming to an end."

Another source expressed a similar view. Both spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

With interest rates virtually at zero and markets awash with cash, the BOJ knows further easing may not have much direct impact on the economy. But it hopes its actions will lift sentiment, prompting companies and households to spend more.

The BOJ thus won't rule out another easing but wants to keep its finger firmly on the trigger, unless a Greek exit from the euro zone jolts financial markets or there is clear evidence that Japan's recovery is being derailed.

That is a different approach from the February and April actions, delivered despite growing economic momentum and justified as aimed at speeding up an exit from deflation.

In a sign of discomfort over the hyped-up expectations, minutes of the April meeting showed board members complaining about "misunderstanding" in markets that the central bank will ease automatically until 1 percent inflation was in sight regardless of what the economy was doing.

The BOJ presented itself as a bold deflation fighter by setting the inflation target and topping up its asset-buying program by 10 trillion yen ($126 billion), double the usual increment. It followed up with another increase of the same scale in April, bringing the target for asset purchases to 40 trillion yen.

Running out of ammunition, the BOJ now wants to pause.

But central bankers are apparently not quite sure how best to do this without disappointing markets and politicians growing impatient with the slow progress in ending deflation.

They got a taste of how tough it is to massage expectations when they removed from a policy statement last week a vow of pursuing "powerful" easing, in place since August 2010.

The move was meant to scale back expectations of frequent easing. It did just that, but a resulting yen rise led Governor Masaaki Shirakawa to stress that there was no change to the bank's powerful easing stance.

Mari Iwashita, chief market economist at SMBC Nikko Securities in Tokyo, questioned why the phrase was removed from the statement if Shirakawa had to revive it shortly after.

"The statement is an important tool for communication," she said. "This episode left some lessons for the BOJ on how it wants to communicate with the market."

TALK AND FORCE-FEEDING

The BOJ is walking a tightrope.

It needs to buy 20 trillion yen more of government bonds by June next year. But some of its bond-buying actions failed to draw enough bids this month as it struggles to force-feed funds to markets awash with cash, a sign it may not be able to top up the asset-buying program as frequently as before.

The central bank also worries that boosting bond buying too much without a clear government roadmap to get Japan's fiscal house in order may cause a jump in yields, a risk that led Fitch Ratings to cut the country's sovereign debt rating.

Shirakawa has thus stressed more than before that the BOJ is already buying huge amounts of bonds and with borrowing costs close to zero, there is little point in simply pumping money into markets. He has also warned that monetary stimulus cannot cure ills and only buys time for long-term structural reforms.

But the message has fallen on deaf ears to politicians who want bolder monetary support for the economy, particularly with Japan's huge debt pile leaving little room for fiscal stimulus.

Some lawmakers have called for extreme steps such as revising a law guaranteeing the BOJ's independence so that the government can tinker with monetary policy.

The government has dismissed such calls but wants the BOJ's support in shielding the export-reliant economy from the pain of any sharp yen rises as it tries to push through a sales tax increase to solve Japan's tattered finances.

That means a spike in the yen or jawboning by politicians will remain the key for any further easing, regardless of what line the BOJ wants to sell to markets, analysts say.

Atsushi Mizuno, a former BOJ board member and an executive at Credit Suisse , said the central bank may be saying too much, not too little, and confusing markets on what exactly it wants to achieve.

"Markets don't have time to read between the lines for subtle messages from the BOJ," he told Reuters this month.

"What markets want to hear is not what Shirakawa thinks is right but the BOJ's strong determination to beat deflation."

Mike TomlinAP

In early 2007, as the Steelers were looking to replace Bill Cowher, I was a huge proponent of Mike Tomlin.? Hidden for years in Tampa because the organization refused to allow position coaches under contract to interview for coordinator jobs, Tomlin proved in one season as Minnesota?s defensive coordinator that he was ready to be great head coach.

And he has been, even if the Rooneys nearly hired Russ Grimm instead.

Per Peter King?s Monday Morning Quarterback, Tomlin was inducted earlier this month into the Hall of Fame at William & Mary, where he started at receiver for three years.? And Tomlin gave a rather eye-opening glimpse into his mindset.

?One of the reasons I work in the National Football League ? I?m tired of the NCAA rules,? he said.? ?I am a win-at-all-costs kind of guy.? The NFL is just right for me, although I am not a bounty guy in any form or fashion.? Any form or fashion. . . .? What you?ve got to understand about the Pittsburgh Steelers is . . . I ain?t got to offer them anything.? Guys like James Harrison ? they?ll do it for nothing. ?The men I work with, I?m a blessed person.?

The easy message is that Tomlin has renounced paying defensive players to wreak havoc.? The more subtle message is that Tomlin wants guys who?ll wreak havoc without an extra cash incentive.

?I?m tired of the NCAA rules.?? It?s also clear that he?s tired of the NFL rules.? Every gripe and complaint and piss and moan from Steelers players regarding the league?s rules for hitting offensive players naturally traces to the coaching staff ? and ultimately to Tomlin.? Last year, for example, safety Ryan Clark was celebrated in the film room for a hit that got him fined $40,000 by the league office.

The dynamic culminated in the powers-that-be on Park Avenue talking to Tomlin and owner Art Rooney, presumably about the trickle-down effect of the things the coaches say to players behind closed doors.? As the NFL tries to make the game safer, Tomlin needs to realize that his ?win-at-all-costs? mindset needs to be tempered by a genuine respect for whatever rules may apply.

Especially when those rules are aimed at allowing the men he works with to be blessed with long, healthy lives.

Ex-Mubarak PM praises 'glorious' Egyptian uprising

CAIRO (AP) ? The two surviving candidates in Egypt's presidential election appealed Saturday for support from voters who rejected them as polarizing extremists in the first round even as they faced a new challenge from the third runner-up who contested the preliminary results.

Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq vowed he won't revive the old authoritarian regime as he sought to cast off his image as an anti-revolution figure, while the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi reached out to those fearful of hardline Islamic rule and the rise of a religious state.

Many votes are up for grab, but the two candidates will have a tough battle wooing the middle ground voters amid calls from activists for a boycott of the divisive vote.

Adding to the uncertainty, Hamdeen Sabahi called for a partial vote recount, citing violations that he claimed could change the outcome, a prospect that may further enflame an already explosive race. Sabahi, a socialist and a champion of the poor, came in third by a margin of some 700,000 votes, leaving him out of the next round to be held on June 16-17.

Many Egyptians were dismayed by the early results, which opened a contest that looked like a throwback to Mubarak's era ? a rivalry between a military-rooted strongman promising a firm hand to ensure stability and Islamists who were repressed under the old regime but have become the most powerful political force in post-revolutionary Egypt.

Each candidate has die-hard supporters but is also loathed by significant sectors of the population.

The first round race was tight. Preliminary counts Friday from stations around the country reported by the state news agency gave Morsi 25.3 percent and Shafiq 24.9 percent with less than 100,000 votes difference. The election commission said about 50 percent of more than 50 million eligible voters turned out for the first round, which had 13 contenders.

A large chunk of the vote ? more than 40 percent ? went to candidates who were seen as more in the spirit of the uprising that toppled Mubarak, that is neither from the Brotherhood nor from the so-called "feloul," or "remnants" of the old autocratic regime.

Sabahi came in third with a surprisingly strong showing of 21.5 percent, followed by Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist who broke with the Brotherhood.

Steven Cook, an Egypt expert with the Council on Foreign Relations, a U.S. think tank, said the outcome of the battles between the two extremes is hard to predict.

"Egypt is following the classic pattern of revolutions. People who made them get frozen out," he said.

He said Shafiq will rely on the same "dynamics" of fanning fears of the Islamists that Mubarak relied on in the past. On the other hand, the Brotherhood will play on the fear of Shafiq's recreating the old regime.

Shafiq, the last prime minister to serve under Mubarak, spent much of his campaign for the first round criticizing the revolution that ousted his former boss. But on Saturday, he vowed there would be no "recreation of the old regime.

"I am fed up with being labeled 'old regime,'" Shafiq said at a news conference in his campaign headquarters in CAiro. "When pressed on the issue, he said: "All Egyptians are part of the old regime."

A former air force commander and a personal friend of Mubarak's, Shafiq was booted out of office by a wave of street protests shortly after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011.

The 15 months since Mubarak's ouster have seen a surge in crime, a faltering economy and seemingly endless street protests, work stoppages and sit-ins. The disorder has fed disenchantment with the revolutionary groups, and played to Shafiq's advantage as he portrayed himself as the candidate best placed to provide security.

But Shafiq is also associated with Egypt's military leadership, which has been heavily criticized as mismanaging the transitional period and failing to reform corrupt institutions or to provide stability. They also have been widely blamed for the deaths of more than 100 protesters, the torture of detainees and holding military tribunals for at least 12,000 civilians.

"Egypt has changed and there will be no turning back the clock," said Shafiq, 70. "We have had a glorious revolution. I pay tribute to this glorious revolution and pledge to be faithful to its call for justice and freedom."

Shafiq also tried to enlist the support of youth groups, singling out the large associations of soccer fans known as "ultras" and April 6, both of which played a key role in the uprising.

"Your revolution has been hijacked," he said twice, "I pledge to bring its fruits between your hands."

His outreach was swiftly rejected by the revolutionary group April 6, with spokesman Ahmed Maher telling reporters that his group will never talk to the former prime minister, whom it considers as a pillar of the Mubarak regime.

Shafiq also held out the possibility of naming Sabahi as a deputy if elected president ? an apparent bid to draw supporters of the third-place finisher to his side.

Sabahi later said he was not ready to accept the results that have been released by regional commissions. The Central Election Commission planned to release official results in the coming few days and those can't be contested.

"We are waiting for official results. We will manage to contest in the runoff and succeed in fulfilling what we started," Sabahi told a crowd of about 3,000 people outside his headquarters in Giza. Some broke out in tears.

Sabahi's campaign manager Hossam Mounis said they had received video clips filmed by supporters showing violations, and complaints had been filed across the country to judges overseeing polling centers.

Hafez Abou Saada, a veteran rights activist and an election observer, said violations such as vote buying and busing in voters were limited but there were more significant problems in the process of tallying votes at regional counting centers. He said the violations were not sufficient to force a new vote but could be cause for a recount.

"The differences are very tight and the aggregation of votes can be difficult," he said.

Observers were largely not allowed to attend that process, but candidate deputies were present.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter also said Saturday that his center was restricted in its monitoring mission, but the process was generally acceptable and violations won't affect the runoffs.

"I don't think the mistakes and errors and improprieties that we have witnessed in the last few days will have a negative impact on the runoff," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, Morsi called for a meeting of Saturday to enlist the support of the candidates booted out of the race in its battle against Shafiq. Three candidates, including Sabahi, turned down the invitations.

The longtime fundamentalist group which won close to 50 percent of parliament seats after the country's first parliamentary elections in post-Mubarak era, has lost a great deal of its credibility across the country's political spectrum, and needs to bridge the chasm with the rest of secular and liberal parties and youth movements.

Liberals accuse the group of hunger for power especially during the critical process of constitution writing in March. Islamist-led parliament packed the 100-member panel tasked to with the country's new constitution, with their supporters, sparking liberals' anger and fear that fundamentalists will try to put limitations on civil freedoms and heavily infuse it with Islamic Sharia laws.

A court ruling ordered dissolving the panel.

On Saturday, the parliament held a heated session discussing new regulations for panel formation. Several lawmakers withdrew from the session protesting lack of specific mention to the mechanism of voting.

MotherJones: Meet Larry Smith, Texas? Wannabe Anti-Shariah Sheriff

By?Adam Serwer?(MotherJones)

Muslim religious law isn?t coming to the Lone Star State. But one Republican is on the lookout anyway.

Larry?Smith, a?former Drug Enforcement Administration agent?running for sheriff in Smith County, Texas, has a unique plank in his platform: He has?pledged?to protect this deep-red border county from the creeping menace of Islamic religious law, or Shariah.

Outside of science fiction, this Texas county?which voted for John McCain at a 70 percent clip?doesn?t seem the most likely place for an Islamist takeover. After all,?creeping Shariah is mostly a myth. The issue might come up in civil cases if both parties to a contract have accepted an agreement based on religious law, but the Constitution bars religious law from superseding civil law.

Despite his out-there Shariah stance, Smith has earned the?endorsement of the county?s local paper.?And local Democrats aren?t even fielding a candidate in the sheriff?s race.?That means next Tuesday?s Republican primary?which includes four candidates for the county?s top law enforcement post?will likely decide whether Smith County?s next sheriff devotes time to worrying about a Shariah takeover.

Two of Smith?s rivals say Shariah shouldn?t be an issue in the race.

?We hear [about Shariah] on the national media, but here specifically in Smith County, Tyler, in the state of Texas, I?m not seeing that this is going to be a big problem,? says Chris Green, a former game warden running in the primary. ?I don?t think it?s gonna occur, especially here; it may in some of the more liberal states.?

Another candidate, Bobby Gorman, Smith County?s chief sheriff?s deputy,?suggested Smith was just trying to provoke a controversy over nothing. ?Running for sheriff, you always want to get somebody?s attention,? Gorman says.

Anwar Khalifa, a local homebuilder, Muslim leader, and lifelong Republican who speaks with a slight drawl, says he was ?shocked? when he heard about Smith?s campaign vow. Before that moment, Khalifa says, he was ?actually supporting Larry.??An Egyptian immigrant who moved to Texas when he was eight, Khalifa says that Smith County is a welcoming and tolerant place, but the last few years there has been an influx of anti-Muslim speakers at local churches offering dark warnings about an Islamic takeover.

?They cloak it and say we?re only talking about radical Muslims, but they don?t differentiate,? Khalifa says. ?This is anti-Islam.?

Smith?s anti-Shariah pledge seems to have helped him gain at least one endorsement, from a local tea party group called Grassroots America, We the People. The group sponsored an event at a local church hosting Brigitte Gabriel, the head of ACT! for America, an organization that sees itself as defending America from ?radical Islam? and?according to its website, has a chapter in Smith County.?Gabriel has written?that Islamic terrorists are ?really just very devout followers of Muhammad.? According to Khalifa, Smith provided ?security? for Gabriel?s event. (Smith did not respond to several requests?for comment.)

?Anti-Muslim grassroots organizations are the vehicles by which these talking points enter the state and local dialogue. That?s why we?ve been seeing it sprout up so suddenly at the local level,? says Wajahat Ali, the lead author of?Fear, Inc., a Center for American Progress report on anti-Muslim organizations. ?The impetus behind it, though, is a movement that wants to exclude American Muslims from the same rights and freedoms that other Americans enjoy.?

Khalifa says that he recently spoke to Smith, who he says apologized for his anti-Shariah pledge. ?[Smith] was very cordial and apologetic,? Khalifa says. But the candidate?s?websitestill sports language promising Smith will use his own money to train officers so they understand ?why Sharia and international law will never be acceptable substitutes? for the Constitution.

This wasn?t?the first time?Khalifa tried to convince a fellow Republican to soften his stance on the Shariah issue.?State Rep. Leo Berman, a Republican who represents the area, introduced legislation in 2011?to ban the consideration of foreign law in Texas courts,?explaining that he had heard Shariah law?was being enforced in Dearborn, Michigan. (It isn?t.) When Berman was preparing his legislation, Khalifa helped convince Berman to focus on ?international law? rather than only Shariah.

Berman?s legislation didn?t survive the 2012 session of the Texas Legislature, but he says he?ll introduce it again next year if reelected.?Asked how he felt about Berman?s legislation, Khalifa said he was happy Shariah wasn?t being identified by name.

?It?s better than singling out my group of folks,? Khalifa says. ?If people really want to hate, they?re going to hate, and there?s not a whole lot you can do about it. You just set an example.?

2 Logic behind why Low-calorie Quality diets Don't Work | gucinet.eu

Have you been intending to consume a low-calorie diet regime so that you can slim down body fat! Before you do this, see this post to discover exactly why low-calorie diet programs don?t work!

SizeGenetics. I cannot inform you how many individuals have e-mailed me personally proclaiming that these people adopted particular well-liked low-calorie diet programs for some months only to find out which they haven?t dropped much fat. As a result they felt in which weight loss is impossible and for that reason, these people quit the diet program altogether!

The main reason why low-calorie diet programs don?t work will be: to eat low-calorie food items, your body basically remains undernourished. You?re feeling sick and tired at all times. Ignore workouts, there isn?t sufficient energy to finish even your regular routines. All these unexpected things happen because your metabolic process will be low!

If you want to slim down efficiently, you have to keep both of these things at heart:

1. Calories are not your opponents: Calories are not what you ought to prevent; calories from fat are required to provide your body with the required nutrition and. When your body receives sufficient food, it?ll improve your metabolic process, that can automatically lead to weight loss!

The unhealthy calories from fat are the type that exist inside junk food. So when you is not going to accumulate body fat by eating 10 apples each day (even though a single apple consists of nearly 100 calories from fat), you will surely obtain body fat by eating 10 cheese burgers!

That is the fundamental difference! You should prevent bare calories from fat (that?s, junk food) as well as accept negative gram calorie food items, such as fruits and vegetables. Right now negative gram calorie does not imply that there is no gram calorie over these food items; that only signifies that so that you can absorb by themselves, simply because will drive your body burning a lot more calories from fat than what they offer! This particular brings about gram calorie debt that can in the end lead to weight loss!

2. Muscle development is a must: Have you any idea in which so that you can maintain by themselves, muscle tissues burn off a lot of your calories from fat? This particular essentially signifies that the harder lean muscle tissues you?ve got, the faster it is possible to shed weight! Consuming protein-rich food items is a good means of creating lean muscle tissues; training on a regular basis during a workout session is an additional. There is another but advantage of ingesting protein-rich food items: you won?t feel hungry all too often; therefore, the potential for overindulging is practically non-existent. Pai Skincare.

When you eat low-calorie food items, you aren?t able to construct muscle tissues; as an alternative a person Shed muscle tissues. When your body doesn?t have sufficient lean muscle tissues, it is not able to burn fat since your metabolic process remains with an unusually low level. So that is but one a lot more reason why low-calorie diet programs don?t work!

Many of these low-calorie diet programs will only assist you to drop drinking water as well as muscle tissues; when you possibly misled in to thinking that you?ve really dropped several lots of kilos, you have not dropped the single most significant point that?s keeping from getting slender: which is Excess fat! If you don?t lose fat, there is no way you can become suit!

The Q4 2011 report on the global internet speed by Akamai, a network specialising in providing internet content in the US, showed that Viet Nam had an average speed of 1.664 Mbps, lower than the average level of 2.3 Mbps in the world.

Thirteen per cent of internet connections had a speed lower than 256 Kbps while 2 per cent had a speed higher than 5 Mbps. In the 10-country ASEAN bloc, Viet Nam ranked behind Thailand (3.054 Mbps), Malaysia (1.8 Mbps) and Singapore (4.6 Mbps).-VNS

Crew shut out Sounders, 2-0

SEATTLE (AP) - Justin Meram and Emilio Renteria scored to lead the Columbus Crew to a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday night.

Meram headed a left-footed cross from Dilly Duka for his third goal in the 15th minute. Renteria sealed the win for Columbus (4-4-3) with a 30-yard chip over Seattle goalkeeper Bryan Meredith in the 76th minute for his first goal.

"Not something that I do every time," Renteria said through an interpreter. "I saw the goalie up and thought I could score."

Columbus' Duka (47) and Carlos Mendes (71) received second-half yellow cards. Seattle's Marc Burch received a yellow card in the 85th minute, and Osvaldo Alonso received one in the 88th.

The Crew came in 0-3-3 against Seattle since the Sounders entered MLS three seasons ago. Seattle even beat Columbus in the 2010 U.S. Open Cup final.

"Goals change the game," Crew coach Robert Warzycha said. "They are a very good team. You have to respect what they do at home. We have new and young players that just want to stick together and prove we are a decent team."

The Sounders (7-3-2) controlled play in the opening 20 minutes and final 10 of the first half, spending the majority of the half in Crew territory. Seattle got off 10 shots and six corner kicks in the first half, but converted none.

Alvaro Fernandez typified the Sounders' struggles in the first half just before the end of extra time. David Estrada took a lofted pass on the right of the box and sent the ball over the Crew defense to Fernandez, who headed the ball down on bounce wide of the right post.

Fernandez stood with his hands on his hips, stunned by the missed opportunity. It was the best of several chances for the Sounders in the half.

"Not happy," Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said. "I thought we gave up a soft goal in the first half. We've got to do a better job of marking at the back post and we've got to score the goal right before halftime. The opportunity that Fernandez had makes it 1-1 and that changes everything."

Alonso had a chance from the top of the box that was shot right at Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum. Also, Sounders midfielder Brad Evans missed with a header, and defender Jeff Parke sent a header off a corner kick over the cross bar.

Columbus midfielder and captain Danny O'Rourke was carted off the field in the 44th minute after landing awkwardly.

Gruenebaum made two diving saves against Fredy Montero in the second half to preserve the shutout.

How the transit of Venus opened the planet to our forefathers

Author Mark Anderson of 'The Day the World Discovered the Sun' explains how the transit of Venus allowed 18th-century astronomers to create an early GPS system.

By Randy Dotinga / May 25, 2012

The planet Venus will dart across the sun on June 5 ? but don't look for it unless you have the proper equipment.

Last weekend, many of us here on the West Coast dabbled in a bit in astronomy during a partial eclipse of the sun. With the sun low on the horizon, I stole a quick glance to see if I could glimpse a shadow.

Yup, I did. And then I saw something else: stars. My eyes!

My advice: Do not try this at home. And definitely don't even think about it at around sunset ET on June 5, when the planet Venus will do something really unusual. It will dart across the sun, and much of the world will be able to watch it make its move with the right (and safe) equipment.

It's called the transit of Venus. The planet will appear as little dark circle on the sun as it zips between us and that big yellow ball.

If you want to catch it, hope for a clear sky because you won't see it again. About every 120 years or so, transits of Venus come in clusters ? two in eight years. The last one was in 2004, and we won't see another until well into the 22nd century. Astronomers long ago figured out when the transit of Venus would occur, and they discovered that timing it down to the second would give them tremendous insight into the solar system.

When the event occurred on June 3, 1769, scientists ? including the famous Captain James Cook ? fanned around the globe in an attempt to uncover the secrets of the universe.

In his new book The Day the World Discovered the Sun: An Extraordinary Story of Scientific Adventure and the Race to Track the Transit of Venus, author Mark Anderson uncovers the tales of the men who literally went to the ends of the earth in search of discovery.

In an interview, Anderson talked about the goals of the missions, the way 18th-century scientists managed to measure time to the second (hint: not with an iPhone stopwatch), and how clouds on the big date may be more than just a mood-buster.

Q: What was the big mystery that all these scientists were trying to solve?

A: In two words, it was "how far."

How far is the most important thing in our universe, the sun? And how far would you go to find that answer? Would you be willing to lay down your life? A host of scientists and explorers at this time did just that.

The other question is essential to the story: How far is the shore? That's the other question, the one that ship navigators could not answer. As a result, thousands of people died gruesome deaths at sea by shipwreck or being lost at sea.

These astronomers had invented an 18th-century GPS system that opened up the entire planet to seafaring nations. The voyages were the perfect testing grounds for this new technology.

The cool thing for the story is that to find the answer to both questions, you have to go to the ends of the earth. That sets the stage for an amazing adventure.

Q: How did this one event in the skies provide so much information?
