Triple-top Wu and He win synchro springboard

China's diving diva Wu Minxia captured her third synchronised three-metre springboard Olympic gold medal with victory in the final with He Zi on Sunday.

In the first of China's quest for all eight diving gold medals at London, Wu and He, the reigning world champions from Shanghai last year, dominated the competition with 346.20 points to claim victory.

The United States pair of Abigail Johnston and Kelci Bryant took silver with 321.90 with Canada's Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel claiming bronze with 316.80.

"We managed to stay focused and calm during the final and constantly encouraged each other in each dive and finally we succeeded in doing our best," Wu said.

"We felt at home here because there were so many Chinese supporters in the crowd."

Although it was Wu's third springboard synchro Olympic gold, it was her first with new partner He.

She teamed up with China's legendary Guo Jingjing to take two gold medals in 3m synchro in the previous two Olympics.

"I don't see much difference in diving with my two partners," Wu said.

Wu, 26, can leave the London Games as the most successful Olympian in the sport along with the retired Guo Jingjing if she wins her remaining three-metre springboard event to add to her current tally of five medals.

She won the last two synchronised gold medals with Guo in Athens and Beijing.

Wu gets her chance to join Guo with six Olympic medals in the individual three-metre springboard, which has its final on August 5.

The Chinese pair's highlights were a competition-high 80.10 points for a reverse 2.5 somersault and a back 2.5 somersault.

They led after all five rounds of dives and gradually extended their advantage with the Americans receiving a 74.70 for their forward 2.5 somersault with one twist.

Wu said the key to Sunday's triumph was her coordination with He, who is making her Olympic debut.

He said the gold medal was the culmination of a long-held dream.

"I did not expect I could become an Olympic champion. Now my dream came true," she said.

Heymans with her bronze won her fourth consecutive Olympic medal.

"It's awesome. I'm really happy I was able to win my fourth medal with Jennifer (Abel)," Heymans said.

"We've worked really hard for this for the past two years, and we're really glad it went well and it's finally over."

I'm setting up a recharging zone as part of a reno, and am looking for USB wall outlets to install. I found the one below on amazon.ca, but have not seen any in local stores. Has anyone seen something similar in retail stores?

I want at least 2 USBs like the one below. Please let me know if you have seen it in a brick and mortar store.

The ideal one is currentwerks in the US has a 4 USB one but I haven't seen it offered in Canada. Pretty pricey at $40 + $13 shipping.

Community Kitchen: Barbecue Sauce

I am from the Northeast, where barbecue is something that happens to other people. Sure, I?d had the odd experience visiting my grandparents in North Carolina, but as a general rule I always regarded barbecue as the sort of exotic fare that is better to read about than to actually eat, like Turkish delight or head cheese.

When I moved to Missouri, I was pleased, if somewhat surprised, at the ubiquity of proper barbecue ? which is to say meat that has been cooked long, slow, and smoky. I would not say that I?ve become a connoisseur, but I?ve certainly become a fan. I also find myself married to a man who is on the verge of banning me from the kitchen altogether, since he seems to regard all non-smoked foods as a waste of time and entropy. Any occasion on which people gather for a meal seems to him a fine opportunity to fire up the smoker; I will not be surprised if we end up having pulled pork this Thanksgiving. I may have to learn how to make cocktails or something just so that I can feel as if I am contributing; in the meantime I just enjoy the ride.

This evening we had some friends over for dinner, which was, for Josh, merely an excuse to try out his smoking technique and a variety of sauces. His earlier experiments have paid off: the meat was tender, flavorful, and more or less falling apart, with crispy burnt ends that guests couldn?t help sneaking from the platter and eating with their hands. The sauces, which represented several different regions, sparked some lively debate among our guests as to which was the best. I favored the Lexington Dip, which was extremely vinegary and hot, but the South Carolina mustard-based sauce also had its proponents. All three were delicious ? and all I had to do was wash the dishes.

Note: All of these sauces should be prepared well ahead of time so that the flavors can meld. Three or four days ought to do it. You can use these sauces as a marinade, mop them onto the meat as it cooks, or just serve it along with the meat as a sauce.

LEXINGTON DIP

1 1/2 cup white vinegar (do not use cider vinegar)
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup apple juice
? cup hot sauce, such as Sriracha
3 tablespoons light brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 teaspoon finely ground black pepper
Whisk together all the ingredients and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

SOUTH CAROLINA MUSTARD SAUCE

2 cups prepared yellow mustard
2/3 cup cider vinegar
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco or Sriracha
? cup brown sugar
? cup white sugar
1 chicken bouillon cube
2 teaspoons dried rosemary leaves
1 teaspoon celery seed
3 teaspoons mustard powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon table salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Mix the wet ingredients together in a bowl. Crush the bouillon cube with a spoon in a bowl add it to the bowl. Crush the rosemary leaves and celery seed in a mortar & pestle or in a blender or coffee grinder and add to the bowl. Add the rest of the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.

EAST CAROLINA KISS

1 1/2 cups of distilled vinegar (white or cider)

1 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Sriracha

2 tablespoons sugar (white, light brown, or dark brown ? we used brown, which I recommend)

1 tablespoon salt

2 teaspoons crushed red pepper

2 teaspoons finely ground black pepper

Pour all the ingredients into a jar and shake.

Jackson move to Mayo could point to complications

CHICAGO (AP) ? Jesse Jackson Jr.'s transfer to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota could indicate a complicating physical illness arose during the Illinois congressman's treatment for depression, several experts in psychiatric care said Saturday.

The Chicago Democrat has been on a secretive leave of absence for nearly seven weeks, during which his office has released only occasional snippets of information, including that he was undergoing treatment for a "mood disorder" at an undisclosed location.

On Friday, the Mayo Clinic distributed a statement from the congressman that said he had been transferred there for "extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues." The clinic would not release more information Saturday.

John Anderson, of the Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology in southeastern Minnesota, said people receiving psychiatric care are often transferred to the Mayo Clinic when a physical illness develops because both can be treated there.

"Mayo does an excellent job in terms of combining those, so they can treat what's essentially a dual diagnosis," he said.

He noted specifically that Mayo Clinic has a highly rated gastrointestinal department as well as a free-standing inpatient psychiatric unit.

Jackson underwent a procedure in 2004 to help him lose weight that involves removing part of the stomach and rearranging the intestine. Phone messages left Saturday for Jackson's spokesman weren't immediately returned.

Friday's statement was the first to mention a gastrointestinal illness, and it was not known whether that was related to his depression or an entirely separate medical issue.

The statement did not disclose where the longtime Chicago congressman, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, had been staying previously.

He went on leave June 10, though his office didn't disclose it until weeks later and has been mum on details ever since. Initially, his office said Jackson was being treated for exhaustion. But his staff later said Jackson's condition was more serious and required inpatient medical treatment. They also said Jackson has been grappling with emotional issues.

Lewis Hamilton wins F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton delivered a flawless drive from pole position to the chequered flag to win Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix for McLaren and revive his challenge for this year's Formula One drivers' world championship.

Current world championship leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari came in fifth, with Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Jenson Button finishing sixth.

Alonso stays on top of the drivers' standings, but Hamilton closed the gap and his victory in the much improved McLaren boosted his team's hopes of mounting a challenge for the title in the second half of the season following the annual summer break.

After 11 of this year's 20 races, Hamilton is back in fourth place with 117 points behind Alonso on 164, Webber on 124 and Vettel on 122.

As they climbed the podium, a grinning Hamilton said to Raikkonen: "It's just like old times, Kimi."

Hamilton added: "An amazing day, fantastic work by all the team and the fans have been fantastic. Thank you for having us.

"I am looking forward to the continuation of the championship. There's a long way to go and a lot of work to do but we have shown we can compete. It is very, very close but we are going to give it all we can."

A less than ecstatic Raikkonen said that a problem with his car's kinetic energy recovery system (Kers) was partly to blame for his inability to catch Hamilton.

"We came second, it's not enough, but we had some problems with the Kers," said the Finn.

"We had some speed and we'll try to win the next race. At least we are up there all the time and we put ourselves in a good position but we are not happy until we win."

His teammate Grosjean added: "It was a fantastic race and we were fighting for the win but we wanted to get back onto the podium with the two cars and that's what we did."

On another hot day at the Hungaroring, where the air temperature was 32 degrees celsius and the track temperature 45 degrees, Hamilton had stayed cool at the start when, after one aborted effort because Michael Schumacher's Mercedes failed to start, he pulled away from pole position and into the lead.

Behind him, with the race reduced from 70 laps to 69 because of the aborted first start, Schumacher started from the pit lane and collected a drive-through penalty for speeding when he came in for an early tyre change.

Schumacher ended a dreadful day in 24th and last place, seven seconds adrift of compatriot Timo Glock of Marussia.

Hamilton went on to build up a lead of 2.1 seconds ahead of Grosjean, but that lead was cut down to less than a second as the Frenchman, on used softer tyres, closed on Hamilton, running on harder medium tyres.

In the searing heat, tyre-wear and management was a major factor and Hamilton's teammate Button made a second pit stop after 35 laps to change to soft tyres.

Genetic cat ancestry test separates the show pets from the masses ...

Ever wondered whether your feline hails from eastern Asia or the eastern Mediterranean? No need to rack your brain anymore -- a geneticist has developed a cat ancestry test that will reveal your pet's lineage.

Leslie Lyons, who heads up Lyons' Feline Genetics Laboratory at the University of California, promises that her cat genome test will uncover whether your pet's parents or grandparents belong to one of 29 "major fancy breeds". So you can finally say for certain if yours really is a pure Abyssinian, or hold off on the bragging if its mother in fact engaged in a relationship with the local alley cat.

Anyone wanting to take advantage of the ?76 test just needs to order one online and send back a cheek swab sample using the cytological brushes (a cotton bud-pipe cleaner hybrid) supplied. Within ten to 15 days you will know whether you should be grooming or shunning your cat.

Lyons' lab isolates the DNA from the swab and tests for specific markers (single nucleotide polymorphisms), which it then uses to generate a profile. This is compared to a database of global cat profiles to see which race it shares the most variants with -- the eight regions that mixed or "random bred" cats (the most common type) originate from are Western Europe, South Asia, Egypt, Eastern Mediterranean, Arabian Sea, Iran/Iraq, India and East Asia (most breeds hail from the first four locations). Lyons collected most of the cat samples for the database while attending cat shows hosted by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), The International Cat Association (TICA) and others around the globe.

After determining its geographical origin the lab then goes deeper, comparing the DNA markers that determine what the cat looks like to 29 breeds (there are around 60, but the 29 are most common) to see if there are any similarities. Being US-based, the 29 common breeds chosen were derived from US "cat fancy registries" -- the CFA and TICA. The heritage of cats outside of the US, therefore, will be more difficult to trace as breeding strategies and their history differ across the globe. Genetic mutations -- or phenotypic traits -- that dictate signifiers such as fur colour or length will further help narrow down the animal's origins, since families of breed share characteristics.

The resulting lineage profile, the lab says, is more than 90 per cent accurate.

"A true random bred cat will not match to specific breeds and low match probabilities will not be reported," the lab warns. "If your cat is a true direct cross with a breed, having a true breed parent or grandparent, this test can detect this breed genetic contribution in your cat."

The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, of which Lyons' lab is a part, also tests for parentage and genetic diseases in alpacas, elks and yaks -- just in case your yak is wondering whether it has been adopted.

Nothing to Sneeze At: Cats Worse Than Dogs for Allergies

If you have pet allergies, chances are it is Fluffy rather than Fido that's making you sneeze. While an estimated 10 percent of people are allergic to household pets, cat allergies are twice as common as dog allergies, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Among children, about one in seven between ages 6 and 19 prove to be allergic to cats.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not cat fur that causes those itchy, watery eyes. Most people with cat allergies react to a protein found on cat skin called Fel d 1.

The reason that cat allergies are more common has to do with the size and shape of the protein molecule, rather than how much dander the animal sheds, according to Mark Larch?, an immunology professor at McMaster University in Ontario.

The protein enters the air on bits of cat hair and skin, and it is so small and light ? it's about one-tenth the size of a dust allergen ? that it can stay airborne for hours. "Dog allergens don't stay airborne the same way cat allergens do. The particle size is just right to breathe deep into your lungs," Larch? said.

The Fel d 1 protein is also incredibly sticky, readily glomming onto human skin and clothes and remaining there, making it ubiquitous in the environment. It has been found in places where there are no cats ? classrooms, doctors' offices, even the Arctic, Larch? said.

While there are no truly hypoallergenic cat breeds ? all cats produce the protein, which experts surmise may have something do with pheromone signaling ? some cats make more of it than others.

"Male cats, especially unneutered males, produce more Fel d 1 than female cats. Testosterone increases glandular secretions," said Dr. Andrew Kim, an allergist at the Allergy and Asthma Centers of Fredricksburg and Fairfax, in Virginia.

If you have cat allergies, there are steps you can take to reduce them. Avoiding contact with cats is one option, though not always a popular choice. Even after a cat is taken out of a house, allergen levels may remain high for up to six months, Kim said.

Limiting a cat's access to the bedrooms of allergic people, using high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, bathing the cat and removing allergen-trapping carpeting may also help.

For those who can't avoid cat dander, allergy shots may be an option. Small injections of the allergen can help build immune system tolerance over time. "It takes about six months of weekly injections of increasing potency to reach a maintenance level, followed by three to five years of monthly injections, for the therapy to reach full effectiveness," said Dr. Jackie Eghrari-Sabet, an allergist and founder of Family Allergy and Asthma Care in Gaithersburg, Md.

A less burdensome fix for cat allergies may be on the horizon. Phase 3 clinical trials are set to begin this fall for a cat allergy vaccine that Larch? helped develop. Early tests have shown the vaccine to be safe and effective without some of the side effects of allergy shots, such as skin reactions and difficulty breathing. Larch? receives research funding from pharmaceutical companies Adiga Life Sciences and Circassia.
