Biodiversity conservation depends on scale: Lessons from the science?policy dialogue

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? The year 2010 marked the deadline for the political targets to significantly reduce and halt biodiversity loss. The failure to achieve the 2010 goal stimulated the setting up of new targets for 2020. In addition, preventing the degradation of ecosystems and their services has been incorporated in several global and the EU agendas for 2020. To successful meet these challenging targets requires a critical review of the existing and emerging biodiversity policies to improve their design and implementation, say a team scientists in a paper published in the open access journal Nature Conservation.

These and other questions of increasing the "scale-awareness" of policy makers have been actively discussed at a special SCALES symposium at the 3rd European Congress of Conservation Biology (ECCB) in Glasgow on 28th-31st of August 2012. The lead author Dr Riikka Paloniemi from the Environmental Policy Centre, Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), in Helsinki, Finland, said: "The policies that regulate biodiversity protection and management operate at many administrative levels, employ a range of instruments at different scales, and involve a variety of governmental and non-governmental actors. These actors often have different insights as to what constitutes a scale-challenge and how to deal with it, inevitably leading to contrasting opinions."

"The question of scale has never been so acute before. Neglecting the spatial and temporal scale at which ecosystems functions when designing conservation measures may lead to long-standing negative consequences, and the failure of the 2010 target is one of the best examples of that" added Dr Klaus Henle from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research -- UFZ in Leipzig, Germany and coordinator of SCALES.

The main conclusion of the scientists is that scale-related problems, and their potential solutions, are all about improving our understanding of complexity of the processes. Dealing with a number of different scales and scale-mismatches in biodiversity conservation is challenging; it requires an analytical and political framework that is able to assess the adverse impacts of global change, and to implement the relevant policies at the relevant scale.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

While some people will carry on with their "regular lives," many other will be dealing with their insurance company.

If you have damage to your home or business, it's time to gather your paperwork and make initial contact with your insurance agent.

And, don't worry about whether the damage you initially see is all of your damage.

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon said you still have time.

"If you make a claim and get a check for an amount that proves to be inadequate later because you didn't know about some of the damage that was present when you first filed your claim or you have additional expenses that come in after you get your first check, you can go back to your insurer, submit those additional expenses and get compensated for that all the way up to two years after the event," he explained.

And, if you think you're not getting the results you should from your insurance company, you can contact the state Department of Insurance for help.

Shutting Off Your Shutoff Valves: Part 2 | 24 Hr Heating and Cooling ...

August 31st, 2012 by Kate Miller Leave a reply ?

Earlier this week, we talked about plumbing fixtures that can be shut off using a shutoff valve in case of emergency or for a repair. Today we are going to finish this discussion by looking at the types of valves you may encounter and how to shut off each type. Shutting off the valve properly will allow you to stop water from flowing to the fixture and therefore make it possible to repair any problems that fixture may be having. Forgetting this step will make quite a big mess should you try to perform the repair with water still flowing to the fixture. This is what you are looking for:

  • Ball Valves: Ball valves are so named because they use a ball to block or allow water through a pipe leading to a fixture. They will either have a lever or an oval shaped knob that can be turned. When the water flow is open the lever or knob will be parallel with the pipe it is feeding water to. To turn the water off, simply turn the knob or lever 90 degrees to the right so that it is now perpendicular with the pipe line leading into the fixture. These valves are typically found under sinks, but they can also be found behind toilets and even on the meter.
  • Gate Valves: A gate valve will open and close a water line by opening and closing a gate or wedge. These valves look like the typical valve you would find on an outdoor spigot. To close a gate valve you will turn the knob clockwise towards the right until it can no longer turn. To turn it back on simply turn the knob back counterclockwise to the left. These are usually found on hot water tanks, toilets, and the main water line.

Play it Safe and Call a Pro!

If you can?t find a valve on a fixture, contact a plumber. Many will be happy to help you find your shutoffs especially if you are having them out for service. If you are ever unsure about what you are doing or what valve you should be turning, play it safe and leave it to a professional. They will have the know-how to safely repair your plumbing system.

Fungi could thwart carbon capture efforts

Plants are the original carbon capture and storage solution: as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rise, plants absorb more of the gas to fuel photosynthesis, and more carbon is stored in the soil. At least that's the theory. But the fungi that live on the plant roots might undo some of that extra work by releasing CO2 back into the atmosphere again.

It's long been known that as levels of CO2 in the atmosphere rise, plants can increase their rate of photosynthesis. This should result in more carbon being stored away in the soil.

Part of the carbon stored this way is used by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which live on the roots of 80 per cent of plant species. But no one knows for sure whether the fungi can make use of the extra carbon supplied by plants when they raise their photosynthetic rate.

To find out, Shuijin Hu of North Carolina State University in Raleigh and his colleagues grew a grass (Avena fatua) in experimental chambers containing elevated levels of atmospheric CO2. Some of the chambers contained grass with fungi living in its roots, while other chambers contained fungus-free grass.

Carbon emitters

After the plants had grown for 10 weeks, the researchers measured the amount of carbon in the soil and in the atmosphere within the chambers. They found that the fungi simply respired the extra carbon supplied by the rapidly photosynthesising plants, returning it to the atmosphere as CO2. Consequently, the atmospheric CO2 levels were higher in the presence of the soil fungi than without.

To make matters worse, elevated atmospheric CO2 apparently stimulated the root fungi, or soil bacteria, to break down soil organic matter, releasing even more CO2 into the atmosphere. In other words, far from being a carbon sink, fungus-carrying soil may become a carbon source under elevated CO2 conditions.

There might be a simple explanation. We know that, in return for carbon, the fungi mineralise nitrogen from the soil into nitrates that are then used by their plant hosts. Once atmospheric CO2 levels rise and plants begins to photosynthesise at a higher rate, the fungi may not be able to provide nitrates quickly enough to meet the plants' demands. In that case, the plants might encourage the fungi to break down soil organic matter to free up the nitrates it contains.

If the findings are correct, we might be able to tip the balance back again by manipulating the nitrogen in soil, says Patrick Megonigal of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland. The next step, he says, is for the authors to determine exactly what role nitrogen plays in the process.

"We're gradually building a picture of one of the biggest black boxes in ecosystem interaction with climate change," says Chris Field of Stanford University in California. But it is a complicated picture: the effect that extra atmospheric CO2 has in these kind of experimental setups might not reflect its effects in the real world, where other factors ? such as elevated heat, or changes in precipitation ? come into play.

A Strong Offense is the Best Online Reputation Defense | Business 2 ...

You can?t ignore the power that search holds for your business. If you?re a serious business person whose business isn?t digital, you?re probably too busy making money to fool around on social media. Social media?s stupid, right? Just baby pictures, workout check-ins, adorable kittens and the self-indulgent ramblings of under-employed folks too far to either the left or the right to amount to much.

Just because you?re old-fashioned doesn?t mean what you?re doing isn?t working.

Big business has adopted many of the tools of the digital age, but it hasn?t gone native ? because it doesn?t need to. Big money doesn?t need digital to do big business. It?s just cream ? an additional channel for additional revenue.

There?s a lot of business being done and a lot of money being made using ?50s-era technology: phone calls, meetings, conference calls, lunches, dinners and hours at the club or the golf course. The Internet has not usurped the traditional, it has merely enriched it; however, there?s also no barrier to entry so this party isn?t exclusive but it?s super-saturated with powerful influencers and new media gods. So, please beware.

Yes, I know: you?re too busy for all of this rubbish. But the truth is, you cannot afford to let another day pass without sending in your social media and search insurance premium.

While I appreciate how valuable your time is, you?re playing a very dangerous game of Russian Roulette. The reason you?re so accomplished is because you are a shrewd judge of the landscape ? and the landscape has changed and it includes not just what?s said by your communications team, your press releases, the New York Times, the Financial Times, or even MarketWatch.

Folks are already talking about you online ? or soon will, gladly and badly.

The social media lunatics have taken over the Internet asylum, and unless your very own personal voice, face, story, narrative, history, resume, wins and losses are fed into the Googlesphere, you?re vulnerable to whatever anyone cares to say about you, no matter who. No doors, gates or private security will insulate you from attack, insult and slander.

A bulletproof vest won?t help if you?re not wearing pants

You need to develop your own online song of yourself on the Internet ? in advance of any problems you might encounter

There is no armor available to protect you besides the active armor that is your own version of yourself online in the form of your biography, personal history and content, content and more content. You need to get in front of the storm that?s sure to come. You need to develop and populate your own personal Whitmanesque song of yourself onto the Internet, into search-optimized text, links, images and photos ? and you need to do it well in advance of any problems you might potentially ever have, no matter how discrete and low-profile you might fancy yourself.

Back in the day, the Internet witch hunt was for politicians, then it became bankers, now it?s evolving toward anyone and everyone who?s thriving in free enterprise and pursuing the American dream, especially as it relates to what?s going on in Washington and the elections. There?s never been a worse time to take your ball and go home. So, it?s better to take some time, get together with your lawyer or business partner, and approve reams of text and start speaking for yourself, your life, your choices and your accomplishments instead of letting someone else speak for you (they?re never nearly as charming as you and your colleagues are, that?s for sure).

?But where?? you ask. Well, you first need to build out any sites you already have, including all your companies, foundations and boards. Next, you should become a blogger ? or at least develop a process to produce blog content since Google adores blogs and seriously understands the architecture and framework of most blog platforms. Finally, you should start populating every social network service, social bookmarking site and social news site. Here?s an incomplete though comprehensive list for you to start on:

43 Things, Badoo, Bebo, Blog.com, Blogetry, Blogger, Blogster, CafeMom, Cyworld, delicious, deviantART, Diaspora, Digg , Diigo , douban, eToro, Facebook, Flickr, Flixster, folkd , Foursquare, Friendster, Google+, GovLoop, hi5, italki.com, iWiW, Jaiku, LinkedIn , LiveJournal, Meetup, mixi, Mubi, Myspace, Netlog, Newsvine , Ning, Open Diary, Orkut, Pinboard , Pinterest, Plaxo, Plurk, Posterous, Reddit , Squidoo , StumbleUpon, tribe.net, Tumblr, Twitter, TypePad, Virb, Vox, WordPress.com, Xanga, XING

Share more than you might want to

Do exactly the opposite of what you?d like: Reveal ?til it hurts.

You need to reveal yourself completely ? as much as you, your spouse and lawyer agree to, anyway (forget your kids, they?ll be embarrassed, of course) ? and you need to give ?til it hurts and well past your normal tendency toward discretion and your obsession with privacy. That Sea-Dweller on your wrist isn?t pretension, it?s because you?ve been a world class Submariner for yours ? but you need to come up for air from now on, otherwise, you?re sure to be sunk.

Feel free to own the yacht but hire a crew if you?re not yet seaworthy. If you get my drift and want to adopt the yachting lifestyle yourself but either don?t have the mad sailing skills yourself, don?t yet posses a world-class crew, and don?t know yet where to go, then you should give me a call or reach out me by email ? so I can help you pilot your vessel now, in the tranquil blue-green shallows of the Caribbean, as well as in the roughest seas and into ? as well as out of ? the storm.

Whichever way you go, please start. You can keep it simple and slow, but start today. You can task your Summer Intern (whatever times? left), you can push it on your PR or communications team, or you can do it yourself ? but do it.

It?s essential that you start feeding your best self online before you?re brought down by just about anyone with a device and a connection to the Internet ? and you won?t be able to sue your way out of this one, I promise you.

Ancient Bugs Trapped In Amber Discovered In Italy

Bugs In Amber

The world?s oldest arthropods ? invertebrate animals that include crustaceans, arachnids and insects, have been discovered in Italy, perfectly preserved in amber like a scene right out of Jurassic Park.

The discovery was made in the northeastern part of Italy and includes one fly and two mites that were trapped in millimeter-scale droplets of amber.

Researchers estimate that the 100 million year old arthropods are the oldest discovered to date.

The full study was published in the?August 27?edition of the?Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences?and scientists hope it will help them gain a better evolutionary understanding of how organisms on earth have become so complex over the last 100 million years.

David Grimaldi, a curator in the American Museum of Natural History?s Division of Invertebrate Zoology, tells?Science Daily:

?Amber is an extremely valuable tool for paleontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years.?

Arthropods are believed to have existed for the last 400 million years but until now the oldest amber discovered was just 130 million years old and did not include arthropods.

The amber droplets range in size from 2-6 millimeters long and were discovered in the Dolomite Alps. Researchers?Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova along with their team of helpers analyzed 70,000 droplets for inclusion into their research, a massive study that left to the discovery of three arthropods.

According to the group two mites species known as?Triasacarus fedelei?and?Ampezzoa triassica?have been discovered.

Researchers will now spend their time analyzing the samples to learn more about the period in which they lived.

Sellers: Don't Let the Dogs Out on the Buyers!!

I will be the first one to admit that our pets are truly our furry children.? We love them so much, so of course we expect you to bristle when an agent tells you that your beloved furry family member needs to be removed for showings.? We have our reasons and I will list a few for you here:

1.? Yes, your pet LOVES LOVES LOVES people.? We get it....but the problem is that they love people when YOU are there.? Strangers are a completely different story.? As lovely as our pets are in front of us, we know that they can be scared or territorial with strangers in their home.? Case in point:? Very nice couple lists their home with me.....2 kitties....said kitties never had an issue with not using the litter box...until the open house and showings, with strangers in their home...they got even by peeing on the carpet and said kitties were given to a friend for safe keeping so that daddy didn't murder them!

barking dog

2. Allergies...unfortunately, there are people that are highly allergic to pet dander.? So as much as they may love your home, they cannot get out of there fast enough when they see signs of your furry children.? Out of courtesy, I list in the showing instructions when there is or has been a cat or dog in the home.? It defuses the situation and allows us to make sure that we are not liable for someone having an asthma attack in your home.

3.? Safety of your pet.? I cringe when I see or hear showing instructions to "not let the cat get outside" or "friendly dog, won't bite!"? Yikes!? I don't want to be responsible for letting your pet be in danger by them escaping the house or that they may harm a child or adult that is not as fond of your animal as you are.

4.? The shedding.....oh my, the hair!? Case in point:? I visited a lovely home today, one in which had a dog, a dog that was kenneled for the showing.? The seller asked me to let the dog out after the showing.? I did, and although the dog behaved and did not jump on me, brushing against my black skirt left me with a furry skirt.? Lint roller , several sheets, were needed to clean that mess off me.? I was not amused.?

?

So remember that when selling your home, you only get one chance to?make a first impression.? By letting your pet hang out in the house, you are greatly reducing the pool of buyers that want to see your home a second time.? The smell of a dog or a kitty box are not smells that are pleasant to someone that does not have pets of their own.? We want the most buyers to see your home and keep that in mind when we ask for you to remove your pets as much as possible.? I have been known to go and scoop up the cat into a carrier myself or take the dog for a short walk while the house is being shown.? Nothing worse than a kenneled dog that is whimpering or barking throughout the showing.

Call me for a free consultation and we will discuss ways to minimize the stress of selling your home on you AND your furry children!

Keep smiling!

U.S. rocker leaves UK hospital after coach crash

LONDON (Reuters) - The last of four band members of U.S. rock group Baroness, who were injured in a coach crash in England earlier this month, has been released from hospital, the band said, adding that it had cancelled all remaining tour dates for this year.

Singer John Baizley was discharged from hospital on Sunday, after he broke his left arm and left leg in the accident on August 15, when the coach transporting the band on a European tour fell 10 meters off a viaduct near the ancient city of Bath in western England.

Nine people were taken to hospital following the crash, including band members Allen Blickle and Matt Maggioni who both suffered fractured vertebrae, and Pete Adams who had minor injuries.

"Thank you to all of you who have been sending the tidal wave of positivity our way," the band said in a statement.

The band, from Savannah, Georgia, was scheduled to play in Belgium and Germany to finish their European tour, but all 2012 tour dates were cancelled after the accident.

Genius or troll? Patent owner sues dozens over anti-piracy method ...

A patent holder who claims to own ?signal abstraction? is going after companies that use basic anti-piracy techniques. The dispute has spawned dozens of lawsuits and raises questions yet again about the state of America?s patent system.

A Miami man who says he invented a form of?cryptography to fight online piracy?is suing Google, Shazam and dozens of others. Is this the second coming of code-breaking genius Alan Turing or just another patent troll?

The man in question is Scott Moskowitz. His company, Blue Spike LLC, has been furiously filing patent suits in East Texas against companies that use common digital water-marking techniques to prevent copyright infringement. His other targets include Sound Hound, Viggle, TuneSat and Facebook.

The lawsuits raise the question of whether Moskowitz should be rewarded with patent monopolies or whether he?s simply exploiting America?s troubled patent system.

Blue Spike?s legal filings explain that Moskowitz is ?a pioneer in this new field between cryptography and signal analysis? and say that the ?signal abstracting? he invented is a novel way to detect unlicensed music, text and films on the internet. Here is a more detailed description:

These are among the most effective techniques available for combating piracy, which are completely undetectable to the thief, yet still enable content owners to easily search through large amounts of data to identify unauthorized copies of their works ???signal abstracting? identifies digital information and material [..] based solely on the perceptual characteristics of the material itself. ??Signal abstracting avoids watermarking?s vulnerabilities by leaving the source signal unchanged and catalogues the signal?s identifying features or perceptual characteristics in a database.

The filing also notes that Moskowitz has worked with the federal government and various professional societies, that he has two degrees from UPenn, and that Forbes and New York Times once referred to his work.

So what to make of all of this? On one hand, Moskowitz is well-versed in the field of digital watermarking and has won patents from the US Patent Office. But should this give him the right to sue every company that employs anti-piracy software?

There are reasons to be skeptical. First, it?s not clear that ?Blue Spike? does anything besides sue people. The company has a website but the site doesn?t list products, clients or prices. And Blue Spike?s ?office? is in Tyler, Texas, whose plaintiff-friendly judges and juries have made it ground zero of America?s patent troll epidemic.?As for Moskowitz, his degrees are from business school ? which seems an unlikely training ground for a cryptography master.

Then there are the patents themselves. Moskowitz applied for the core one in 2000 at a time when the US Patent Office was issuing patents for methods of swinging on a swing and exercising a cat with a laser pointer. Moskowitz?s US Patent 7,346,472?is for a??method and system for monitoring and analyzing at least one signal? and describes a technique for comparing signals against those in a database.

The patent may be valid and good (I?ll leave it to the engineers to decide) but there is still the question of whether Moskowitz should be allowed to brandish such a broad monopoly against so many companies. The targets now face an unpleasant choice between buying a license to make him go away or paying hundreds of thousands (or more) for a court fight.

Moskowitz?s lawyers say it?s about ?going forward with what you believe in and not letting people walk all over your rights.? They say Blue Spike is not a patent troll. The targets of the patent mugging may disagree.

Ohter Blue Spike defendants include: Rovio; MySpace; Audible Magic; Specific Media; Photobucket; DailyMotion; Soundcloud; Myxer; Qlipso; Brightcove; MediaFire; Zedge; Harmonics; iMesh; Metacafe; iPharoah.

Since the ancient times, Chinese have been drinking tea. They have believed and reported health benefits from tea. It has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years. Today, there are numerous studies showing evidences improvements in health attributed to tea drinking. More and more people drink tea for their health.

In the Journal of National Cancer Institute (published in 1994) they claimed that drinking tea has reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by a huge 60 percent. While, the University of Purdue researchers claimed that green tea can prevent the growth of some cancer cells. Tea has polyphenols that can reduce risk not only of esophageal cancer, but also gastric and skin cancers.

It can also help in the prevention or the spread of prostate cancer as discovered by the Center of Human Nutrition at UCLA. It can also protect the body against cancer brought about by smoking. Green tea and white tea are significant in fighting colon and lower stomach cancers.

Tea can also improve the ratio of good and bad cholesterol levels in your body. The same polyphenols help in preventing blood from clotting and are responsible in lowering cholesterol levels. Thus, drinking tea is a great help for heart disease patients.

These are not only the health benefits attributed to tea. According to Newcastle University?s Medicinal Plant Research Centre study, tea might also delay Alzheimer?s disease. While, University of Tokyo stated that tea may play a role against fighting AIDS.

Aside from cancer it can also be helpful in rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, infections, and impaired immune function. There are also new studies claiming green tea helping those who would like to lose weight. Those who drink caffeine and green tea tend to burn more calories that those consuming caffeine only.

Because of its ability to fight and destroy bacteria, green tea can even fight against tooth decay. It can kill dental plaque just as it can help prevent food poisoning. In the market, there are also deodorants and skin creams with the component of green tea in it.

How can something be this good?

The secret is the polyphenols, especially the epigallocatechin galleate or EGCG. ECGC is an anti-oxidant. This powerful anti-oxidant can kill or prevent the growth of cancer cells without harming the healthy tissue and cells. It also has flavonoids and catechins which are also anti-oxidants. It also has fluoride which is why it can fight tooth decay and helps control bad breath.

Different kind of teas has different levels on antioxidants. White tea has more antioxidants compared to other tea. Freshly brewed teas have more polyphenols than instant or bottled teas. Thus, freshly-brewed teas have more antioxidants than instant teas.

Caffeine is also present in tea. Caffeine levels or amount in brewed tea depends on the type of the tea. Black tea has higher amount of caffeine than green tea. The amount of caffeine also depends of length of time of brewing, and also on the water temperature. If the leaves are exposed to higher water temperature, more caffeine are drained from the leaves.

The American Diabetic Association reported that a cup of tea has an average of 40 mg. of caffeine. A cup of freshly brewed coffee has an average of 85 mg. of caffeine. An average of 350 mg. of caffeine consumption is still good for a healthy individual.

Currently, the only negative effect reported in drinking too much tea is insomnia. This would be because of the caffeine content of tea. So start brewing your tea, drink for your health.

(AP) ? Syria's state news agency says a booby-trapped car has exploded in a Damascus suburb, killing a number of civilians.

SANA says Tuesday's blast in Jaramana targeted a funeral procession for two people who were killed a day earlier in the area.

It says it is the third bombing in Jaramana in the past 24 hours.

SANA says that an explosive device detonated in a car in Jaramana on Monday killed its driver. It says the device was attached to the car by an armed "terrorist" group.

Another car blew up in the area overnight, also killing the driver.

No further details were immediately available. It was not clear whether the targeted funeral procession Tuesday was for those killed in the earlier blasts.

Hot Rod City in Performance Magazine!

Michael Dezer is a renowned New York City and Miami real estate developer and has been a collector of cool cars since the 1970s.

His collection is eclectic. He loves micro-cars from the 1950s and ?60s; he loves ?dream? cars; he loves television and motion picture cars from Hollywood; and all sorts of motorcycles and scooters, including a huge contingent of Vespa motor scooters and other Eastern European brands.

?

A Growing Collection

Dezer?s passion is collecting these ?works of art,? as he calls them, and it?s what he spends his time at when he?s not developing real estate properties.

He?s accumulated hundreds of them, along with thousands of pieces of memorabilia, many of which are on display at The Dezer Collection, a car museum in South Florida.

Over the years, Dezer not only filled, but outgrew an 18,000-square-foot museum at the Trump resort in Miami Beach. He moved to a bigger 250,000-square-foot place and outgrew that too. So now, some of it is spilling over far to the west in Las Vegas at a place called Hot Rod City.

Hot Rod City came about when, a few years back, Dezer decided to develop some real estate in Las Vegas and purchased a property in the industrial area west of I-15 just off Tropicana. It?s in the shadow of a few well-known hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, and as new developments go it had a lot of promise as a destination resort, Vegas-style, for a new museum displaying Dezer?s continually growing collection of cars and motorcycles.

Then the bottom fell out of the market.

The upside is that for the past few years, Dezer has had more time for his real passion: the occupation of car collecting. And sitting on the property already was a big industrial complex with storefront areas, office space and warehouse space.

So, to make the most of the property without razing it, Dezer contacted Steve Levesque, a Los Angeles-based classic car aficionado and collector of vintage Vespas. Levesque operates a public relations firm called Luck Media & Marketing and its Las Vegas-based spinoff, Luck Media & Motors, dealing in classic cars, motorcycles, scooters and hot rods.

Together, they came up with the concept of Hot Rod City as a showroom and museum anchoring an automotive complex?geared?toward automotive-related businesses.

?

All Things Automotive

?It?s growing steadily and becoming a synergy between tenants,? says Levesque. ?It?s like a one-stop shop for your car where you can find everything from tires to upholstery to mechanical work to a paint job. And, it?s a community of businesses that support each other.?

Additionally, Dezer has the West Coast version of his car and motorcycle collection at Hot Rod City, which includes famous television and motion picture vehicles.

It?s an interesting place to come in and see cars, and for Dezer, more convenient to sort and display the vehicles he gets from west of the Mississippi.

Vegas is a great place for this, he explains, because the city hosts several auto-related events including the Barret-Jackson Auction, the SEMA/AAPEX Shows, NASCAR racing, many other car and motorcycle auctions and ongoing events at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

?In all it?s an automotive-friendly, car collector-type of town,? says Levesque.

Ultimately, Dezer has multiple goals for Hot Rod City. One is to showcase the vehicles, most of which he believes are works of art that the public should have the opportunity to see.

But he also hopes to make the most of the property. Hot Rod City is a brand concept that helps all the tenants and adds value.

Levesque says tenants are excited about the concept.

?First-time tenants in an industrial center like this have been coordinating and working with other tenants. It?s like a big family.?

On a Saturday in May, Levesque, the honorary ?mayor? of Hot Rod City, presided over a Grand Opening celebration that featured a cool car and bike show, food, drinks, a live broadcast from KOOL 102.3 FM, biker babes, hot rod chicks, ?Elvis? and a surprise visit from retired UFC champion Randy Couture.

Of course, a lot of the cars from the museum were on display.

Levesque says that after the success of May?s grand opening, a number of events are in the works, like more live radio broadcasts, Saturday car clubs, swap meets, tail-dragger meets, body restoration clinics, BBQs, music and a lot of car shows.

?

A Good Community

William ?Willy? Salzmann and his son ?JR? (Willy Junior) have been operating MCR Corvettes, a performance parts and service shop that?s been in the same location since 1975. JR says overall there?s been a positive change since Dezer moved in with Hot Rod City and gave the area a cosmetic facelift.

?There are more cars here, for sure, and nothing gets messed with any more since they cleaned up the place,? he says. ?And we did get a couple of jobs from Hot Rod City, when customers who bought Corvettes from them asked for the neighborhood Corvette mechanic to look them over.?

Marc Brattin, the owner/operator of Las Vegas Choppers and Las Vegas Tattoo Parlor, agrees.

?It?s definitely a nice touch and a good group of businesses collected here,? Brattin says.

Carl Roberson?s shop, Carl?s Cool Cars, repairs and restores all types of automobiles. He?s been located in the area since 2009. He says he spent six weeks looking around for a suitable location after moving down from Alaska.

?I?ve developed relationships with other shops and we help each other out,? Roberson says. ?If someone gets something in that they can?t or don?t want to work on, there are a lot of resources here. It?s a good community.?

Roberson says it?s an excellent location for his kind of service operation. ?The complex is not razzle-dazzle; it?s older, but clean, painted and well-maintained.?

Other new tenants are coming in because of Hot Rod City, and are attracting even more business opportunities.

Dillon Cox moved in with his growing scooter dealership and repair business, DRC Scooters, last winter. Like Roberson, he spent a significant amount of time looking for a suitable location, and was attracted to the atmosphere and the other auto-related businesses in the area.

?We talked to the people here, and found the same mentality,? he says. ?We like to have fun. We stick to ourselves and hang out and it?s a good bunch of people around here. This is probably the best location I could find for my business in Vegas. It?s a great location, the cost is great and we get no hassle from people. That?s why we moved in here.?

Plus, he says, business has actually been picking up quite a bit recently.

?

City Planning

With Hot Rod City?s plans to promote the complex and host more activities, more customers are bound to find it. As things progress, Levesque says other tenants will also be displaying their work.

It?s growing by word of mouth and Dezer?s collection is definitely a draw to the car enthusiasts. It?s a synergistic atmosphere, which is valuable to the tenants, as well as Dezer.

?I knew Las Vegas would be a great place to house a portion of my collection,? Dezer says, ?but I am truly overwhelmed with gratitude for the people there who have made Hot Rod City so successful this past year. Their strong initial reaction to the collection reminds me of how great a car town Vegas is. They?ve also provided me with a great excuse to visit my cars and enjoy the city more than ever before.?

Improvely Launches Simple Product to Track Online ... - Money

Lansdale, PA (PRWEB) August 28, 2012

Improvely today launched its extremely low cost product to help small businesses measure the results of their online marketing campaigns. Using Improvely, marketers can measure which of their paid advertising, social media marketing and other traffic sources are best driving signups and purchases on their websites. Improvely offers revenue attribution abilities typically only available in enterprise solutions for prices within reach of small business customers.

Improvely makes it possible for any business to measure the exact response to online marketing campaigns. The need for an easy-to-use tool like this was apparent to founder Dan Grossman after consulting on marketing campaigns with numerous small businesses over several years. "Many businesses have tried to advertise online, with Google and Microsoft and yellow page directories. The problem they all had was being unable to tell which of the advertising was bringing people to their websites to buy their products."

With Improvely, a business owner can learn which of their ads was responsible for specific purchases on their website. This allows them to quickly see whether their time and money spent on each marketing campaign was worthwhile.

Improvely also provides its customers with simple ad testing tools. A business can see a 10% or more increase in sales through simple changes to the text, images and design of the webpage their ads are linked to. Improvely makes testing variations of advertisement landing pages easy by sending different visitors to the customer's site to different variations of the webpage, then measuring which variation lead to the most revenue.

Multi-touch attribution, a feature typically only available in enterprise software costing thousands of dollars a month, lets Improvely customers see the interaction between all of their marketing efforts and traffic from other sources such as search engines and review sites like Yelp. The business owner can see, for example, if many of their customers are reading reviews then returning to their website through a Google search before purchasing.

Improvely offers monthly subscriptions starting at $29 per month.

About Improvely

Improvely is a product of Awio Web Services LLC, founded by entrepreneur and software developer Dan Grossman in 2004. Awio's mission is to help small businesses get the most out of their online presence.

Raise Taxes If It Saves Social Security, Americans Say

WASHINGTON -- Most Americans say go ahead and raise taxes if it will save Social Security benefits for future generations. And raise the retirement age, if you have to.

Both options are preferable to cutting monthly benefits, even for people who are years away from applying for them.

Those are the findings of a new Associated Press-GfK poll on public attitudes toward the nation's largest federal program.

Social Security is facing serious long-term financial problems. When given a choice on how to fix them, 53 percent of adults said they would rather raise taxes than cut benefits for future generations, according to the poll. Just 36 percent said they would cut benefits instead.

The results were similar when people were asked whether they would rather raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments for future generations ? 53 percent said they would raise the retirement age, while 35 percent said they would cut monthly payments.

"Right now, it seems like we're taxed so much, but if that would be the only way to go, I guess I'd have to be for it to preserve it," said Marge Youngs, a 77-year-old widow from Toledo. "It's extremely important to me. It's most of my income."

Social Security is being hit by a wave of millions of retiring baby boomers, leaving relatively fewer workers to pay into the system. The trustees who oversee the massive retirement and disability program say Social Security's trust funds will run out of money in 2033. At that point, Social Security will only collect enough tax revenue to pay 75 percent of benefits, unless Congress acts.

Lawmakers from both political parties say there is a good chance Congress will address Social Security in the next year or two ? if the White House takes the lead. Yet so far, Social Security has not played a big role in the presidential election.

In previous polls, Democrats have typically scored better than Republicans on handling Social Security. But the AP-GfK poll shows Americans are closely divided on which presidential candidate they trust to handle the issue.

Forty-seven percent said they trust President Barack Obama to do a better job on Social Security, and 44 percent said they trust his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney. The difference is within the poll's margin of sampling error.

Charles McSwain, 69, of Philadelphia, said he trusts Obama because he thinks the president is more likely to stick up for the middle class.

"He at least gives the appearance of trying to help people that aren't super rich, and Romney doesn't," said McSwain, who works part time selling real estate.

But Jeff Victory of Nashville, Tenn., worries that Obama doesn't have the stomach to cut benefits to help rein in the program.

"Barack has already shown he's going to give anything free out to everyone he possibly can, so I'm going to have to go with Romney on that one," said Victory, a 26-year-old electrician.

Romney has said he favors gradually increasing the retirement age, but he opposes tax increases to shore up Social Security. For future generations, Romney would slow the growth of benefits "for those with higher incomes."

Obama hasn't laid out a detailed plan for addressing Social Security. But during the 2008 campaign, he called for applying the Social Security payroll tax to wages above $250,000. It is now limited to wages below $110,100, a level that increases with inflation.

Obama says any changes to Social Security should be done "without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable or people with disabilities, without slashing benefits for future generations and without subjecting Americans' guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market."

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, has been a leading proponent in Congress of allowing workers to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal investment accounts. Romney has not fully embraced the idea, but Democrats are using it to accuse Republicans of trying to privatize Social Security.

Romney put Ryan on the ticket Aug. 11. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Aug. 16-20.

About 56 million people get Social Security benefits. Monthly payments average $1,236 for retirees.

The options for fixing Social Security fall into two broad categories ? raising taxes or cutting benefits, or some combination of the two. But there are many options within each category. For example, raising the retirement age is a benefit cut for future generations, because they would have to wait longer to qualify for full benefits.

Retirees now can qualify for full benefits at age 66, a threshold that is rising to 67 for people born in 1960 or later.

In previous polls, most of the options for addressing Social Security scored poorly among the public, which helps explain why Congress hasn't embraced them. But the AP-GfK poll forced people to make a choice: Raise taxes or cut benefits? Raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments?

Democrats, Republicans and independents all favored raising the retirement age over cutting monthly payments. But there was a big divide on raising taxes. Sixty-five percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents supported higher taxes, compared with just 38 percent of Republicans.

"Raising taxes, especially on the people that provide the jobs for us, is not an option because what you do there, you discourage promoting jobs," said James Taylor, a 68-year-old retiree from Golden, Miss.

But Juan Tellez, a 22-year-old college student in Gainesville, Fla., said he would accept higher taxes if it means preserving benefits, even though he's not very confident Social Security will be around for his generation.

"I think of Social Security as an investment, as a public investment almost, something more communal," Tellez said. "I feel like I would want to invest in that."

About three-quarters of the public believe Social Security is an important issue, though there is no consensus about whether people will be able to rely on it throughout their retirement. Only 30 percent said it was very likely or extremely likely they will be able to rely on Social Security.

Among people younger than 35, just 20 percent believe Social Security will provide income throughout their retirement, while 55 percent of people 65 and older said the same.

"I'm not planning on it at all, honestly," said Victory, the 26-year-old electrician.

The poll involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
