WACO (July 22, 2012)- The McLennan County Public Health District has confirmed five cases of West Nile Virus in McLennan County, and one death has also been confirmed.

The Health District says that an 80-year-old McLennan County resident has died because of the virus.

There are also three suspected cases of the virus including one outside of the county.

Elderly and people with compromised immune systems are at a greater risk for severe complications.

According to the Health District symptoms of the virus include fever, severe headaches, confusion, disorientation and weakness in your muscles.

To help prevent the virus the Health District recommends checking around your property to eliminate any standing water that may provide a place for mosquitoes to breed. Avoid being outdoors especially in the late evening, wear long sleeves and long pants and use a repellent to prevent being bitten.
