BASKETBALL

New World wins Middle School title

New World Prep captured the Staten Island championship of the New York City Middle School Basketball League with a 66-39 win over Lavelle Prep Thursday.

Jason Escribano scored 16 points, Kae-Shon Vinson added 12 and Amad Anderson had 11 for the boys? 7th-8th-grade squad.

The league has been in existence for 15 years in the other four boroughs, but this is the first season for the Staten Island division.

New World Prep faces MS 226 (Virgil I. Grissom) Thursday in the first round of the city playoffs.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Tourney action

Joe Boxser drove in the winning run in the seventh inning as the Just for Kicks Yankees won the Great Kills LL Easter Tournament Major title with a 6-5 decision over the Indians.

Andrew Cordero picked up the win and Joe Finkel the save for the Yankees, who earlier topped the Astros 9-1.

Christian Gonzales struck out 10, went 3 for 3, and slugged a two-run homer to power Gold Star Post to a 5-3 Mid-Island LL Major win over Jimmy Max.
