Lake Norman Soccer Club offers recreation league | Mooresville ...

by Justin Vick

Lake Norman Soccer Club is known for its elite travel teams, but the club also offers recreation leagues for children wanting to give the sport a try.

About 85 children played in the fall league. Spring practice begins Feb. 5, with games spanning from February to April.

?We?re trying to get it to where we?re not just a club for the elite player,? said Daniel Boehm, who oversees the recreation league. ?This is a good way for us to really reach out for those who like to play soccer for fun.?

Practices and games are held at Mazeppa Road Park. The proximity of the fields allows for younger players to watch the older ones practice and provides a festive family atmosphere when games are played simultaneously, Boehm said.

Recreation leagues also allow for the soccer club to reach children young enough to where they can develop into elite national players, Executive Director Philip Poole said.

If a child dreams of playing college soccer, the club tries to put that player in a position to reach that goal ??through training and opportunities to play in front of college coaches.

The soccer club recently joined the Atlantic Soccer League, allowing older teams to travel all over the East Coast to play in college-level showcases. Such exposure could lead to scholarships, Boehm said.

?Our goal is player development and pushing kids to be the best they can,? Boehm said.

Lake Norman Soccer Club?s 95 Eclipse Team placed third in the Disney Soccer Showcase last month in Florida. The girls played some of the nation?s best teams in one of the biggest college showcases.

Some of club?s players, namely Marnie Merritt and Stephanie Westaway, received invitations to play at national camps.

?It is very important that we take care of the 5-year-old that wants to give soccer a try and get his feet wet,? Poole said. ?As a result, we?ve got some of the best kids in the nation. You?ve got to be a club for everyone.?

Lake Norman Soccer Club is registering boys and girls to play on U6, U8 and U10 recreation teams. Registration costs $65. Uniforms cost $50. Details: 704-662-3330 or www.lakenormansoccer.com.
