9/11 Memorial Exhibition at The ... - Triangle Arts and Entertainment

Falling Man

We invite you to join us on Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 2-5PM for a reflective gathering at The Carrack Modern Art to observe the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that occurred in New York City on September 11, 2001. The current exhibition includes a mixed-media installation by Steven Silverleaf, photographs of New York City by Jenny Warburg and sculpture by Jim Lee.

Local artist, Steven Silverleaf, works in a variety of media in both figurative and abstract styles. His show at The Carrack includes a large, multi-panel piece titled Falling Man?and eight subsequent works on the adjacent wall. Gestural figure drawings in black oil paint fall freely towards the ones below against a fiery background ? each one threatens the boundaries of the next adjoining sheet with inevitable downward motion. Silverleaf?s installation tells a story about the frailty of our reality and the finite nature of our existence. His figures are frozen, mid-fall, against the infinitely vast backdrop of space and time.

Silverleaf states, ?The title,?Falling Man,?was never intended to reference September 11, 2001 but now I see it as being very much about 9/11.? The scenes from that fateful day are seared into our consciousness.? The people who reported to work on that September 11th at the World Trade Center were not suicidal, yet that day many of them were forced to decide whether or not to jump out a window to escape being burned alive only to plunge to their death.? This is a tragedy.? And our shared trauma of watching these people jump to their death cannot help but remind us of our own humanity.?

Jenny Warburg, originally from New York, is a local photographer, political activist and former social worker whose photographs have appeared in numerous national and international publications, including The New York Times, Time, Newsweek and Rolling Stone. Her photos documenting the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 currently hang at The Carrack, facing Silverleaf?s installation. Her poignant images capture individual moments in the lives of those directly affected and create a chilling portrait of New York City in a state of immediate tragedy and loss.

Jim Lee?s Untitled (09/11/01) is also on view at The Carrack. First commissioned for the Durham Art Guild?s?September 11 Remembered?exhibit in 2002, Lee?s sculpture evokes the iconic imagery of the skeletal remains of the Twin Towers.

Please join us this Sunday for an afternoon of quiet remembrance in the presence of these commemorative works of art.?The exhibition will be on view at The Carrack until September 16th, through Third Friday Durham.
