Work ... - North Platte/Lincoln County Convention and Visitors Bureau

North Platte has long dabbled in the Sports Tourism market, and now there is momentum to do more than dabble. With the heritage of our incredible softball tournaments, motor sports calendar, rodeo, Legion Baseball, soccer, Babe Ruth Baseball, Trap and Skeet, Road Runs and so much more already in place, we are poised to capitalize on this foundation and bring transient sporting events to North Platte in a big way.

Dave Mlnarek, director of the Nebraska Sports Council was in town on Thursday at the invitation of the North Platte/Lincoln County Convention and Visitors Bureau. He met with community leaders from business, the City and existing sporting organizations to offer ideas and advice, plus impart a vision of what a local sports commission could do.

Nationwide, the transient sports event market (those sporting events such as softball, soccer and the like that move from community to community, usually in a bidding process) is more than $4 billion annually. North Platte has the facilities and the perfect location to offer teams from the Denver, Cheyenne, Rapid City, Omaha/Council Bluffs/Lincoln and Kansas City metro areas a central tournament site in which to compete against high-caliber they wouldn?t normally have the opportunity to meet. This is just one example of how sports tourism could impact the local economy.

With the rural setting in Lincoln County, smaller communities within a thirty minute drive from North Platte could benefit from this effort as well. These small towns take pride in their sporting facilities, whether part of the schools or community complexes. These facilities can be packaged with facilities in North Platte to provide venues for very large tournaments.

The process is in its infancy, and current focus is on identifying leaders interested in shaping the direction of the commission.

For anyone interested in becoming involved in the development of this Sports Commission, please contact Lisa Burke, Executive Director of the North Platte/Lincoln County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 308-532-4729 or lburke@visitnorthplatte.com
